SALISBURY — Her father at the helm, Cheryl Wyrick was the second person in the van Saturday morning.

The destination: Disney World.

Her estranged husband, Daniel, handed her their 2-year-old, Damon. A smile crept across her yellow-toned face.

The 10 a.m. sendoff was a dream come true.

After a year in remission, doctors again diagnosed Cheryl in August with an aggressive stomach cancer. Earlier this month, they said liver failure would give her just weeks to live.

But the community turned out in full force a week ago for a charity yard sale benefit, raising more than $20,000 for Cheryl’s last wish — a trip to Orlando with her family.

Wyrick said she has never been on a family vacation. In recent months, she’s lived on food stamps, Medicaid and charity to make ends meet.

She and her family hustled out of the steps and onto the muddy driveway Saturday morning. It took only a couple seconds before they were on the road.

“I am actually like Disney-kid excited. I feel like I am a three-year-old,” Wyrick said. “I could not sleep last night. I was up at 3 a.m. folding clothes.”

Cheryl also gets a bonus.

Neighbor Crystal Casper and her family are going, too.

Crystal, who is also Cheryl’s sister-in-law, has helped her with day-to-day duties as Cheryl has undergone treatment.

Hilda Goodman, a friend and co-organizer of the yard sale, said much the donated funds also paid for Cheryl’s final expenses.

The remaining balance will go into a trust fund for Cheryl’s children, Damon and Adian, she said.

“We always see all the bad and this is the good,” Goodman said. “It’s a trip of a lifetime for them.”

As the sliding side-door closed Saturday, Cheryl flashed her trademark toothy grin.

“I’m literally so excited,” she said, “not only for myself but for these boys because they’re going to have a ball and that is going to tickle the death out of me.”
