Livingstone’s men’s basketball team won 68-56 at Johnson C. Smith’s Brayboy Gym in a CIAA game attended by 1,479 fans on Saturday night.
The victory kept the Blue Bears (18-5, 10-4) in front of the Golden Bulls (16-8, 9-5) in the divisional standings. LC is 6-2 in the Southern Division, while J.C. Smith is 5-3.
Mark Thomas didn’t have a great shooting night, but he still finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ethan Anderson scored 14 on 7-for-10 shooting.
Tyler Johnson and Jody Hill scored nine points each.
When the Golden Bulls cut Livingstone’s lead to six points with about six minutes to go, Johnson hit a jumper and made two free throws, and Livingstone maintained a safe lead the rest of the way.
The Blue Bears shot 43 percent, but they held J.C. Smith to 38-percent shooting.
Livingstone limited J.C. Smith star Trevin Parks to 13 points. He lit up the Bears when the Bulls won at Trent Gym.
Livingstone is home Wednesday against St. Augustine’s.

Catawba men

Catawba’s men’s basketball team struggled Saturday afternoon and lost 72-52 at Tusculum.
Catawba shot 35 percent, while Tusculum shot nearly 53 percent. There likely was some carryover from the Indians’ disappointing overtime loss to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.
Catawba’s starting backcourt shot 1-for-11 on 3-pointers, and Lee Martin also had an off day shooting.
Elon Edwards scored 19 points despite a 1-for-6 effort from the 3-point line to lead the Indians.
Tyrece Little had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Martin had Vismantas Marijosius (North Hills) had eight rebounds each. Nick Houston (Carson) scored seven points.
Darius Carter sparked the Pioneers with 19 points.
The Indians (7-15, 4-10) were swept by Tusculum (6-16, 4-10) and dropped into a tie for seventh with the Pioneers in the SAC.

Catawba women

Catawba’s women’s basketball team put together a strong performance and blasted Tusculum 83-62 on the road on Satutrday.
Catawba (13-9, 9-5) won at Tusculum (13-9, 7-7) for the first time since 2007 and now is tied for third in the SAC.
Quaneasia Coleman had a career game for the Indians and scored 20 points.
Elizabeth Merritt also scored 20, while Antionette McPhail had 17 and Chloe Bully 15.
Taylor May (South Rowan) shot 4-for-4 and added nine points.
The Indians shot almost 58 percent for the game and nearly 70 percent in the second half. Catawba settled things with a 29-6 run in the first half.
Breaira Barksdale scored 18 for the Pioneers. Kendal Baxter scored 15.

Livingstone women

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost 65-63 to J.C. Smith at Brayboy Gym on Saturday. Tiffany Evans scored 13 points for the Blue Bears. Tyesha Tharpe had 11 points and 19 rebounds. Kelcyn Manurs also scored 11.
The Golden Bulls (8-15, 5-9, 3-5) got 14 points each from Deanna Downer, Brittany Dorsett and Lakendra Wilkinson.
A 3-pointer by Ashley Walker pulled Livingstone within a point with 28 seconds left, but the Blue Bears (7-16, 3-11, 1-7) couldn’t score again.

Women’s hoops

Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) hit two 3-pointers for Brevard in Saturday’s 58-53 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.
• De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) had six points and seven rebounds for Elizabeth City State in a 49-47 win against Virginia State. Wylie hit two clutch free throws late in that CIAA game.

College baseball

Catawba is scheduled to play two games with Wingate today at Newman Park, starting at 1 p.m.
• Pfeiffer is at home against Belmont Abbey for a doubleheader scheduled to start at noon today.

College swimming

Catawba’s men’s swimming team finished fourth out of 12 entries in the Bluegrass Mountain Championships held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
Catawba’s women finished eighth.
Catawba’s Sebastian Holmberg was named the meet’s top male swimmer.

College men’s lacrosse

Catawba opened the men’s lacrosse season with a 15-9 win against Coker at Shuford Stadium on Saturday.
Matt Symes and John Schiech had four goals each.

Women’s lacrosse

Catawba lost 16-3 to visiting Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.
Loren Dunn scored seven goals for the visitors.
Catawba (0-2) took a 2-1 lead early on goals by Erin Palma and Ebony Mills.

College softball

Catawba split a doubleheader with 21st-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan at Whitley Field on Saturday.
Catawba (5-4) won the opener 4-0 and dropped the nightcap 2-1 in a game shortened by snowfall.
Catawba freshman hurler Carley Tysinger tossed her third straight one-hitter in the opener and had a no-hitter until the seventh. Gina Gerone hit a two-run homer.
Tysinger has pitched 26 straight scoreless innings.

College tennis

Catawba swept Lees-McRae at the Johnson Tennis Center on Friday, with the men (5-2) posting an 8-1 win and the women (6-1) triumphing 7-2.

Pfeiffer basketball

Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team lost to Limestone 70-56 in Gaffney, S.C., on Saturday.
Charles Blue scored 23 for the Saints. Joe Ledbetter had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons (3-21, 1-16).
• Maria Young scored 24 points to lead Limestone’s women to a 72-53 win over Pfeiffer. Limestone has won 14 in a row. Brittany Cox led Pfeiffer with 23 points.
