CHARLOTTE (AP) — Six World War II veterans from the Carolinas have been honored with France’s highest military award, the Legion of Honor.
The Charlotte Observer reported that six veterans and the family of a seventh man were honored Monday in Charlotte.
France’s consul general to the Southeast United States, Denis Barbet, told the soldiers that their heroism embodies a French-American friendship that dates back to the American Revolution.
Those honored include Clyde Polk of Charlotte, Elbert Davis of Hampstead, Dewitt Wells of Winston-Salem, David Gordon of Cary, George Pulakos of Indian Land, S.C. and John Harmon of Saluda, S.C.
The family of Frank Pruitt of Spartanburg, S.C., received his award. Pruitt died recently.
The Legion of Honor was created two centuries ago by Napoleon Bonaparte.
