Cut paper, mixed media exhibit set to open at Rail Walk

Rail Walk Studios and Gallery will feature new work by a Salisbury cut paper and mixed media artist.
Ingrid Erickson’s show titled “East/West,” will be on display through March 2.
An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
The exhibition will include large scale works in cut paper, mixed media, and tyvek as well as folding screens and scrolls.
The works were created in two artist residencies this year at The Jentel Foundation in Sheridan, Wyo. and closer to home at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland.
The diverse ecosystems, flora, and fauna of both locations were an inspiration for this body of work.
Erickson taught English and art in Southern China and Northern Thailand from 2004 to 2006, and traveled extensively in both countries.
The title “East/West” refers to both the artist’s non-traditional incorporation of Asian and Southeast Asian influence, as well as her recent experience as an “Easterner” out West in Sheridan, where she was awarded an artist residency with the Jentel Foundation from Aug. 15 to Sept. 13, 2012.
Erickson was one of 48 visual artists nationally to be awarded a month-long residency at Jentel this year.
Jentel is situated on a 1,000 acre working cattle ranch at the base of the Big Horn Mountains and provides studios and living space to four visual artists and two writers at a time.
Rattlesnakes, mule deer, porcupines, kit foxes, coyotes, pronghorn antelope, and Western Meadowlarks were among the creatures that appeared outside the artist’s studio.
Erickson was one of 28 artists to be awarded a residency at Wildacres Retreat.
Each artist or musician is invited for a solo residency at the “Owl’s Nest” cabin for one week. The Owl series, a series of 24 cut paper mandalas, was inspired by this snowy, windy week in the mountains.
