SALISBURY — Authorities say a Marine recruiter based in Salisbury sexually assaulted two young female recruits, including one assault that occurred in the recruitment office.
Sgt. Derek Craig Percival, 24, forced one victim to perform oral sex at his home at 6206 Grandeur Drive, located at The Grand apartments on Julian Road, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The assault took place Jan. 19 and 20, authorities said.
Percival threatened to kill the victim and attempted to rape her, authorities said.
The second victim was assaulted Wednesday at the Salisbury Marine Recruiting Office on Arlington Street.
Percival restrained the victim and kissed and fondled her against her will, according to the Salisbury Police Department.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office and police department on Thursday began a joint investigation into complaints about Percival.
Sheriff’s office and police detectives continued the investigation Friday and contacted the U.S. Marine Corp. about the allegations. Percival met both victims through his Marine recruiter duties, authorities said.
Percival is charged with attempted second degree rape, false imprisonment, communicating threats, sexual servitude of a child victim and two counts of sexual battery.
He was arrested Saturday morning at his home and is being held under $100,000 bond in the Rowan County Detention Center.
The Marines are aware of the arrest and have notified their own investigators, local authorities said.
Anyone with more information about this investigation should contact investigators at the either the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office at 704-216-8700 or the Salisbury Police Department at 704-638-5333.
