College football
Lenoir-Rhyne has signed coach Mike Houston to a contract extension through the 2016 season. Houston led L-R to its first playoff appearance in 50 years in 2012.

College track
Wingate’s Rodney Richards (Carson) finished ninth in the 60 hurdles in the Winston-Salem State Open on Sunday.
It was Wingate’s first-ever indoor track meet. Richards placed ninth in 9.06 seconds.

North Hills hoops
The North Hills jayvee boys basketball team defeated Grace Christian Academy 59-33 on Friday. Ian Bradshaw led the Eagles with 25 points, and Austin Patterson contributed 10 points.
• The North Hills varsity boys defeated Grace Christian Academy 87-49.
Chris Taylor led the Eagles with 26 points. Bradshaw had 23, and Leonard Murdock scored 18.
The Eagles play at Piedmont Community Charter on Tuesday. Games start at 5.

Middle school wrestling
Southeast won the conference tournament on Saturday, with Erwin placing second.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
Winning team members were Don Goodnight,Tommy Reynolds and Treva Honeycutt. The second-place team was Bryan Reynolds, Kim Kincaid and Walt Kincaid.
Closest to the pin was won by Chris Curtis and longest putt was won by Harry Owen.

8th-grade hoops
In China Grove’s 57-30 loss to Knox’s boys in the first round of the conference tournament, Cameron Corriher scored nine points for the Red Devils and Dillon Norton had eight. Cole Howard added five for the Red Devils (4-11).

College swimming
The Catawba men’s swimming team, ranked 20th in Division II, claimed wins over Limestone and VMI on Friday in a meet at Limestone.
The Catawba women topped VMI, but fell to the host Saints. The men edged Limestone 62-60, while topping VMI 104-18. The women claimed a 106-11 victory over VMI and lost 89-33 to Limestone.
Freshman Sebastian Holmberg won three individual events for the men.
Andrew McCollister (Salisbury) won the 1000 free (10:02.85).
Katia Kruglov won the 100 back and 200 back to lead the Catawba women.

Pro golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. — Brian Gay won the Humana Challenge on Sunday for his fourth PGA Tour title, beating Charles Howell III with a 5 1/2-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff.
Gay closed with a 9-under 63 on PGA West’s Arnold Palmer Private Course to match Howell and Swedish rookie David Lingmerth at 25-under 263.
• ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Jamie Donaldson won the Abu Dhabi Championship by one shot Sunday, with Justin Rose narrowly missing a birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff.
• KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii — John Cook caught David Frost on the final hole of regulation, then beat him with birdie on the second playoff hole to win the Mitsubishi Electric Championship on Sunday.

Rose’s 8-foot putt rimmed out of the hole, giving the Welshman his second European Tour victory. He shot a 68 to finish at 14-under 274.
Rose (71) threw his club up in the air in frustration while Donaldson flashed a relieved smile. Rose tied for second with Thorbjorn Olesen (69) of Denmark, who also failed to force a playoff on the 18th when his 15-foot birdie putt rolled past the hole. Olesen, playing with Rose, had putted first.
“It was a tough field, brutal golf course,” said Donaldson, whose win will move him in into the world’s top 30.
It was fifth-ranked Rose’s tournament to lose. The Englishman had a two-shot lead over Donaldson and Olesen and led all week, hitting greens and making timely putts. But he was shaky from the start Sunday, scrambling early to save pars and then hitting errant drives on Nos. 5, 11 and 16 that led to bogeys, while finding it difficult to read the greens.
“It was definitely hard work today,” Rose said. “You want to close out with a chance to win when you have it and didn’t do that today. But I didn’t do a lot wrong, either.”
The 47th-ranked Donaldson won his first tournament last year in his 266th European Tour event.
After Rose hit a drive into the trees for a bogey on No. 16 then missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th, Donaldson appeared in control. But the Welshman didn’t make it easy for himself. He missed a long birdie putt on the final hole and then a 5-foot putt for par. He settled for a bogey and figured there would be a playoff.
“It was annoying to finish like that,” Donaldson said. “But you need a little luck sometimes in golf to win.”
