May scores 22 for Catawba

Taylor May (South Rowan) scored a career-high 22 points to lead Catawba’s women’s basketball team to a 65-56 SAC win against Tusculum on Saturday at Goodman Gym.
May shot 9-for-12 from the field and added seven rebounds.
Antoinette McPhail had 20 points and seven rebounds. Chloe Bully had 14 points and seven assists for the Indians (7-5, 3-1).
Catawba ended a 12-game losing streak against the Pioneers (8-4, 2-2). Ashley Thurman had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers.
Catawba is at Lenoir-Rhyne (4-0 SAC) on Wednesday.
• The Livingstone’s womens basketball team defeated Virginia State 83-79.
• King upset Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team 70-64 in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday in Bristol, Tenn,
Brittany Cox scored 25 for the Falcons (9-2, 4-2). Brooke Johnson scored 21 for King (7-4, 3-4).
• Former Statesville star Janitsha Williams scored 22 points to lead Wingate to a 69-62 SAC win against Mars Hill on Saturday at Mars Hill.
Prep wrestling
East Rowan’s Jason Deutsch and Carson’s Alex Lyles were tournament champions at Saturday’s Bobby Lloyd Invitational held in High Point.
Deutsch won at 120 pounds when he won an 11-3 major decision against High Point Central’s Kyle Rogers.
Lyles was the winner at 220 when he took a 12-3 major decision over HPC’s Dontae Ingram.
Carson’s Brandon Sloop placed second at 160. Sloop lost 5-3 in the final to Pinecrest’s Rider Excell.
Carson’s Brady Argabright took third at 113, and Carson’s Cody Brown was fourth at 285.
Pinecrest won the event. Carson placed sixth, while East Rowan was 15th.

College swimming
Pfeiffer’s women’s swim team defeated Catawba 135-127 on Saturday in Misenheimer. It was the first win for Pfeiffer in the series in 12 years.
Catawba’s men won 155-103.
Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won 32-27 against Our Lady of Mercy.
Annie Habeeb scored 15 points for the Dolphins. Peyton Russell scored seven, and the Dolphins also got key contributions from Julia Honeycutt, Dakota Insley, Anne Marie Metz and Leah Wyrick.
• Sacred Heart’s varsity boys fell 34-22 to Our Lady of Mercy.
Michael Childress led the Dolphins with seven points. Justin Boyd scored five. Other key contributors included Will Casmus, Adam Habeeb, Bryan Reid and Will Taylor.
North Hills hoops
The North Hills varsity boys won 94-29 against Hayworth Christian.
Leonard Murdock and Chris Norris scored 14 points each for the Eagles. Chris Taylor scored 12.
Daniel Lehrbaum had 12 for the Knights.
North Hills takes on Mt. Zion on Tuesday in jayvee boys, varsity girls and varsity boys games. The tripleheader starts at 4:30 p.m.
Corriher-Lipe’s girls beat Southeast 39-20.
Keirsten Morgan scored 19 points for the Yellow Jackets, while Kailie Ketchie had 11.
Alejuandra Street scored five for the Patriots.
• Corriher-Lipe (6-7) won 27-8 against West Rowan Middle’s girls.
Ketchie had 10 points, while Morgan had six.
Khara Fesperman scored three to lead the Bulldogs.

The NCHSAA kicked off the official celebration of its 100th anniversary on Saturday.
YMCA
Hurley YMCA registration for boys high basketball for grades 9-12, age 15-18, is being held through Feb. 3.

8th-grade hoops
Knox’s girls won 56-15 against Southeast.
Tyzarea Alexander led the Trojans with 14 points. Kiilantra Mashore and Mystajakal Phifer scored 12 each. Deztane Hightower scored eight, and Niah Spratt had six.
