You saw her opening for Chickweed 2012. You saw her opening for Historic Salisbury Foundation’s Annual October Tour 2012. You’ve seen her ring in the New Year at Salisbury’s annual celebration at the old Bell Tower. And you might have caught her performances at Salisbury’s Friday Nights Out.
Now is your chance to see Willow Catherine’s premiere solo debut performance, “Intrépide,” featuring a mix of original songs and cover tunes, on the evening of Willow’s 19th birthday at the Looking Glass Black Box Theatre, 405 N Lee St. on Friday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m..
The title “Intrépide” is in sync with the fearlessness of this young performer. Willow Catherine, an 18-year-old up-and-coming singer/songwriter originally from Brunswick, Ga., now lives and works in Salisbury. Her obsession with classic rock music began early, with Elvis Presley sparking her initial interest in her music career. Willow names other classic rock influences as Blue Oyster Cult and Tom Petty, along with modern artists such as Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey.
Never missing an opportunity, Willow performs at events such as local open-mike nights or Salisbury’s popular Friday Nights Out where musicians can be found on nearly every street corner. Willow was a featured performer — and the younges— for the Chickweed music and art event last summer that raised funds for the Family Crisis Council of Rowan County. Willow’s plans for the future include recording a demo CD of some of her original tunes, performing for Chickweed 2013, and to “live spontaneously, endure more heartaches, and make new moments.”
Intrépide will open with the music of another young Salisbury performer, Jabe Fisher. A 19-year-old RCCC student, Jabe says he’s been influenced by such bands as Old Crow Medicine Show, Phish, and Yonder Mountain String Band. He plays guitar, and a little banjo, and listens to bluegrass, folk, and blues. He looks forward to one day taking his singing, playing, and song-writing talent out into the world beyond Salisbury.
Both Willow and Jabe will be sharing not only their musical influences but their original songwriting with audiences at Intrépide. Lou Bodak will accompany Willow on his handmade cajon, a unique percussion wooden ‘box.’ The gallery walls will feature original art by RailWalk Studios & Gallery artist Karen Frazer.
Intrépide is a Chickweed event, and all proceeds will benefit The Family Crisis Council’s (FCC) Women’s Shelter, helping victims of violence. Demo CDs and Willow Catherine bumper stickers will be available for sale and Willow will be donating all proceeds from CD sales to the FCC. Pottery 101 at 101 S. Main St., and ZINC at 314 Depot St. are generously sponsoring Intrépide.
Tickets for Intrépide are $3 in advance and $5 the evening of the show. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Looking Glass Artists Center, 405 N Lee St., or at Pottery 101, 101 S Main St., at the corner of Main and Innes Streetss, until noon the day of the show.
