Livingstone’s men’s basketball team won 79-76 at Virginia Union in CIAA action on Saturday night.
Livingstone (10-1, 2-0) stormed back from a 13-point halftime deficit to stun the crowd of 765 at Richmond’s Barco-Stevens Hall. The Blue Bears trailed by as many as 18 points early in the second half.
Mark Thomas scored 24 points for the Blue Bears, who checked in at 50 percent for the game. Thomas shot 8-for-12.
Anthony Welch had a huge night off the bench, making three 3-pointers and scoring 17 points. It was Welch, who made the pivotal shot. His 3-pointer with 18 seconds left put the Blue Bears ahead.
Eladio Espinoza contributed 10 points, eight rebounds five assists and three blocks.
Tyler Johnson went 6-for-6 from the line and grabbed nine rebounds. Johnson got the board when Virginia Union missed a late free throw that would’ve tied it, and he then knocked down two at the foul line for the final margin.
Marcel Crump scored 20 points to lead the Panthers (2-7, 0-1). Cordero Holt had 17.

• Pfeiffer lost to Erskine 82-76 in overtime on Saturday in Merner Gym in Conference Carolinas action.
Josh Humphrey scored 23 points for the Falcons (2-8, 1-3) and had 10 rebounds. Matt Ellwood had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Rodrick Perkins scored 24 for the Flying Fleet (7-2, 3-2).
• Coach Dave Davis’ Newberry squad put seven in double figures and flattened Mars Hill 113-72 on Saturday in SAC play.
• Ryan Daye scored 23 points as Wingate thrashed Tusculum 76-47 in SAC action on Saturday.

Women’s hoops
Livingstone’s women’s basketball team won 76-74 at Virginia Union in a CIAA game played on Saturday in Richmond.
Down 74-70, the Blue Bears scored the final six points.
Kelcyn Manurs hit two free throws with 59 seconds left to narrow the deficit, and Cierra York tied it 74-all with a layup with 20 seconds remaining.
Manurs hit two decisive free throws with 16 seconds left.
Livingstone (5-6, 1-1) trailed 40-34 at halftime.
Ashley Walker scored 17 points to lead the Blue Bears. Manurs had 14, and York scored 12.
Paress Davis scored 17 for the Panthers (4-6, 1-1).

• Christina Harvey scored a career-high 32 points as Pfeiffer’s women cruised 79-66 against Erskine on Saturday at Merner Gym.
Pfeiffer is 8-1 and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas. Erskine fell to 0-10, 0-5.
• Former Statesville star Janitsha Williams scored 18 points to lead Wingate to a 64-48 SAC win against Tusculum on Saturday.

Prep girls basketball
A.L. Brown’s girls beat Cox Mill 35-33 in SPC action on Friday.
Megan Shue led the Wonders (5-7, 2-1 SPC) with nine points, and Jennifer Raper scored eight.
• The North Hills girls beat Gospel Light 45-32 in the semifinals of the Tri-City Tournament in Conover.
Abby Lane had 16 points and six rebounds for the Eagles. Natalie Whicker had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
C.C. Lyerly scored six points and had seven rebounds. Taylor Foster had six points and eight rebounds, and Emily Boggs scored six points.
Madison Link had four steals.
• North Hills beat Statesville Christian 40-33 to win the championship on Saturday.
Lane had 18 points and five steals. Whicker had eight points and seven rebounds. Lyerly had 14 rebounds.
• Akela Branch scored 22 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to lead Albemarle to a 57-35 YVC win against East Montgomery on Friday.

Prep boys hoops
Andrew Wheet poured in 29 points to lead Northwest Cabarrus to an 82-57 SPC win against Robinson on Friday.
Freshmen Anthony Caldwell (10) and Austin Davis (12) also were in double figures for the Trojans.

Prep swimming
South Rowan’s swim teams celebrated Senior Day in style by sweeping a tri-meet with North Iredell and West Rowan on Friday at the J. Fred Corriher Jr. YMCA in China Grove.
The South boys won with 149 points. North Iredell finished second with 96 points, while West Rowan scored 55.
The Raiders won every event. Jeremiah Bradshaw won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle races. Luke Rary won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Dillon Parker won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Stetson Johnston won the 100 backstroke, and Nathan Shorter won the 100 breaststroke. The relay team of Bonner Buchanan, Rary, Bradshaw and Parker won the 200 medley relay. Buchanan, Tyler Fuller, Dylan Goodman and Parker won the 200 freestyle relay. Buchanan, Bradley Bettis, Bradshaw and Rary won the 400 freestyle relay, qualifying for the regional championships in the process.
Josh Buinicky led the way for the Falcons,with a second place in the 100 backstroke. Jacob Flemming came in third in the 50 freestyle. West Rowan got fourth-place efforts from Flemming (200 free), Nick Waldo (200 IM), and Thomas Webb (100 free).
South’s girls turned in a dominating performance, raking in 162 points to North Iredell’s 88 and West Rowan’s 37.
Leslie Franks won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.
Casey Pruitt won the 200 IM. In the race of the day, Pruitt fended off hard-charging freshman Madyson Campbell in the 100 butterfly. Campbell missed first place by six-hundreths of a second.
Taylor Kluttz (50 freestyle), Nicole Mauldin (100 backstroke), Sydney Kelly (100 breaststroke), and Faith Casswell (100 freestyle) also won for the Raiders.
Casswell, Kelly, Pruitt and Mauldin won the 200 medley relay. Mauldin, Kelly, Kluttz and Franks won the 200 freestyle relay. Mauldin, Casswell, Kluttz and Franks won the 400 freestyle relay.
Katelin Johnson (fourth in the 200 free) and Tyler Myers (fourth in the 100 free) were the top finishers for West.
The Raiders and Falcons return to action on Tuesday at the South Y against East Rowan and Carson

Local golf
Former Salisbury High standout Roy Dixon III shot 73-76 — 149 and tied for 11th in the 5th Carolinas Young Amateur Tournament played in Pinehurst. Dixon finished seven shots off the pace.

Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations through Jan. 12 at Hall Gym for youth basketball leagues for boys and girls ages 5-6 and for girls ages 7-15. Cost is $35.
