COLLEGE PARK, Md. — With a first-half performance that was as brilliant as it was surprising, freshman Jake Layman added his name to the vast list of contributors to the second-longest winning streak in Maryland history.
Layman scored 18 of his 20 points before halftime, and the Terrapins rolled past Virginia Tech 94-71 Saturday for their 13th consecutive victory.
Maryland’s winning streak matches an identical run in 2001-02 and is one short of the school record set in 1931-32. After defeating 12 non-league opponents, Maryland opened the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its schedule with a satisfying romp.
Fla. State 71, Clemson 66
CLEMSON, S.C. — Okaro White had 15 points and stole an inbounds pass with 17 seconds left to preserve Florida State’s 71-66 victory over Clemson (8-5, 0-1) to start Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The defending ACC champion Seminoles (9-5, 1-0) led by 16 points on Michael Snaer’s 3-pointer to start the second half, yet were ahead just 66-63 in the final minute with the ball in the Tigers’ hands.
Miami 62, Ga. Tech 49.
ATLANTA — Mired in a slump, Rion Brown made himself at home on the road Saturday when Miami’s junior guard came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points and lead the Hurricanes to a 62-49 win at Georgia Tech — once his father’s home.
Even without injured center Reggie Johnson, the Hurricanes (10-3, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) had size to spare while outscoring the Yellow Jackets 28-16 in the paint and outrebounding the home team 40-29. Georgia Tech (10-3, 0-1) suffered its first loss in nine games in its new arena.
Davidson 85, UNC Greensboro 53
DAVIDSON — Jake Cohen had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Davidson scored the first eight points of the game to cruise to an 85-53 victory over UNC Greensboro in a Southern Conference game.
De’Mon Brooks scored 14 points, which gave him 1,000 for his career, and had seven rebounds. He is the 43rd Wildcat player to reach 1,000 points.
Nik Cochran scored 12 and JP Kuhlman 10 for the Wildcats (8-6, 3-0). Cochran was 6 of 6 from the foul line. He’s 50 of 52 this season.
WCU 72, The Citadel 55
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Trey Sumler scored 17 points and Tom Tankelewicz chipped in 14 to lead Western Carolina to a 72-55 Southern Conference victory over The Citadel on Saturday night.
Preston Ross scored 11 points and Brandon Boggs chipped in 10 for the Catamounts (5-9, 3-0), who are 3-0 in the league for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Sumler also had six assists, four steals and four rebounds. Western Carolina had lost three in a row, but two of the losses came to Georgetown (81-68) and Tennessee (66-52).
East Carolina 91, NC Wesleyan 60.
GREENVILLE — Maurice Kemp finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists to help East Carolina dominate Division III North Carolina Wesleyan 91-60.
Ty Armstrong added 14 points and eight rebounds, Miguel Paul scored 13 points and Akeem Richmond added 10 points off the bench for East Carolina (9-4).
South Carolina 80, South Carolina State 69.
COLUMBIA, S.C.— Frank Martin does not worry about the past. When he was told South Carolina (10-3) had matched its win total from a season ago with an 80-69 victory over South Carolina State, he quickly shrugged it off.
Martin was more worried about what his team was going to face in the upcoming 18-game SEC schedule that begins on the road against Mississippi State next week. It’s the first time since the 2008-09 season that the Gamecocks have won double-digit nonconference games and just the second time since 2003-04.
UNC -A 83, Liberty 69
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Keith Hornsby scored 27 points to lead UNC Asheville (7-8) past Liberty 83-69 and snap the Flames’ three-game winning streak in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.
Will Weeks chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds.
