?SALISBURY — A cigarette butt may have caused a small mobile home fire Thursday morning on Dappler Lane.
Jan Terry, who rents the home off Statesville Boulevard, said she stamped out the fire in her bathroom prior to firefighters’ arrival. Investigators have not confirmed the cause of the fire.
The fire occurred just before 10:30 a.m in a mobile home park less than 3 miles from Salisbury Fire Department’s station No. 4.
Franklin and Salisbury fire departments both responded.
Ellis Cross Country and Locke fire departments were en route, but canceled before arriving.
Terry said she had a pile of towels in the bathroom that she believes contained a cigarette butt. The fire spread to the carpet, she said.
She extinguished the fire with her cane. She used the cane to pull apart the towels to ensure the fire did not spread, she said.
Terry called 911 so firefighters could make sure the fire was fully extinguished, she said.
“God was looking out for me,” she said, seated in a camping chair outside the home.
Terry has lived at the home for 15 months.
Assistant Fire Chief Michael Spry with Franklin Fire Department said there was a little bit of damage to the bathroom.
He said Terry received minor burns to the bottom of her feet. She was looked at by Rowan EMS, but did not require treatment.
Firefighters cleared smoke from the mobile home using an industrial fan.
