‘Memphis Belle’ takeoff set for second try today

The B-17 bomber that portrayed the Memphis Belle in the movie of the same name is now scheduled to leave the Rowan County Airport today after high winds prevented its scheduled departure Friday.
The plane, famous for portraying the bomber that was first to complete 25 successful missions in World War II, has been at the airport for three weeks. Interior work has now been completed by Carolina Avionics and Interiors, and Liberty Foundation pilots are set to fly the big bomber to Atlanta for heavy maintenance.
The takeoff is open to the public and vehicles will be allowed to park next to the runway. The departure is weather permitting, so anyone interested in attending should check with the airport after 11 a.m. to confirm the actual takeoff time.
It will be the second event at the airport today.
Santa Claus is scheduled to skydive into the airport shortly after 9 a.m. He will remain inside the airport terminal until noon to talk with children.
Both events are free. Donations and canned goods will be accepted for Rowan Helping Ministries. Parking is on the airport grounds and will be plentiful. For more information, contact the Rowan County Airport office at 704-216-7749.
