Kaleb Kimber (West Rowan) scored 16 points for Rio Grande on Sunday in an 80-72 loss to Warner in Lake Wales, Fla.

•Livingstone’s men’s basketball team is in action tonight at home against Claflin at 6 p.m.

• Catawaba is home Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Limestone.

Salis. Academy hoops
Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls won 37-10 against St. John’s of Winston-Salem.

Jenny Kribbs and Maria Capito scored eight points each for the Jaguars. Morgan Warren scored six points.

Abby Lee, Madison Day and Juliana Anderson combined for a dozen points.

Lee had five rebounds, and Lee, Anderson and Kribbs had three steals each.

Prep basketball
Reagan’s Howard West, 65, recently recorded his 700th head-coaching win when the Raiders beat Lexington.

West ranks third on the state’s all-time list.

Butch Smart (recently retired) is second with 708. The late Harvey Reid recorded 818 wins and died in 1991 while still coaching.

West’s goal is to coach for 50 years.

West coached 11 years in Virginia, four seasons at Eden Morehead, 17 at R.J. Reynolds and has been at Reagan the past eight seasons.

West has coached teams in the South Rowan, West Rowan and Davie gyms.

• There are no local prep games tonight, but Tuesday will be a big night with the start of play in the North Piedmont Conference and South Piedmont Conference.

In the NPC on Tuesday, West Rowan is at Statesville; East Rowan is at Carson, and West Iredell is at South Rowan.

North Rowan is home against Gray Stone in the YVC.

A.L. Robinson opens SPC play at Robinson.

Davie plays a non-conference game at Lexington on Tuesday that will end its pre-Christmas activity.

Davie’s boys (8-1) have wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the Christmas tournament.

West Rowan’s girls are in the driver’s seat for a No. 1 seed in the tournament as they take an 8-0 record into this week’s games against Statesville and South Rowan.

College golf
Catawba’s Paige Haverty won four consecutive SAC Player of the Year awards (2003-06) for women’s golf.

That feat was recognized recently by the SAC as the 20th most significant moment in SAC history. No other women’s golfer has accomplished the feat.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a three-person Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.

First-place team members were Gene Seaford, Robin Leslie and David Huneycutt.

The team of Ricky Honeycutt, Don Goodnight and Rick Carlton finished second.

The longest putt was won by Seaford. Tommy Reynolds won closest to the pin.

Women’s hoops
CONWAY, S.C. — Antoinette Bannister came off the bench to score 13 points and No. 19 North Carolina defeated Coastal Carolina 75-49 on Sunday.

In their last game, the Tar Heels (10-1) beat North Carolina Central 49-21, matching their lowest point total in a win in 37 years. North Carolina scored 39 in the first half against the Chanticleers (6-3).

• No. 21 Miami lost to Rutgers 42-34 on Sunday.

Monique Oliver scored 13 points and Rutgers held No. 21 Miami to its worst shooting performance of the season.

The Scarlet Knights (7-3) limited Miami (7-2) to 19.1 percent (9 of 47) from the field.

• Radford’s Ayana Avery (West Rowan) had 11 points and six rebounds in a 74-55 loss to Clemson on Sunday.
