Christmas Happiness donation symbolizes legacy of giving

Christmas Day will mark the one-year anniversary of Gene Curlee Jr.’s death, and a gym is honoring his memory with a $200 donation to Christmas Happiness.
Matthew Marsh, co-owner of The Forum Fitness, said he thought it was a great way to pay tribute to the uncle of his business partner, Steve Safrit.
“He was just a fantastic person, he would just be so happy to know that something was being done for the kids,” Marsh said.
Safrit said his uncle’s first loves were his grandchildren, Emma and Jack Leonard.
“His second passion was giving back,” he said.
Curlee was a member of First Presbyterian Church, past master of Fulton Masonic Lodge No. 99 and an avid golfer.
He helped raise money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and founded an annual golf tournament to benefit the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford.
“I think this donation is a tribute that he would like to see. It symbolizes his legacy,” Safrit said.
Safrit said he’s thankful Marsh came up with the idea to donate in memory of Curlee.
“It means a lot to me to know that money is going to help kids who are less fortunate,” he said.
