Helping Handbags comes in big for Christmas Happiness fund

With many women and some men (for their wives) going shopping at last week’s Helping Handbags fundraiser at the Salisbury Post, $3,119 was raised for the Christmas Happiness Fund.
Anyone who purchased a bag, or two or four, helped provide presents for children who live in low-income households.
The Christmas Happiness Fund program is sponsored by the Salisbury Post, which accepts donations.
The Rowan County Department of Social Services distributes vouchers to eligible families.
“We had a great sale this year — the first day was awesome with over $1,400 in sales,” said Classified Advertising Manager Sharon Jackson, who spearheaded the fundraiser.
Jackson and many more volunteers sorted the purses, categorized them and managed the sale for a week.
Jackson said the momentum slowed a bit and by the end of the week, all of the handbags sold for $1 each. The purses that didn’t sell were donated to a local charity. Organizers are undecided on continuing this particular fundraiser next year.
Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.
Make checks payable to the Christmas Happiness Fund and indicate how you wish your donations to be listed.
