SALISBURY – Two vehicles collided Monday after a motorist failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Old Concord Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
Madie Gibson, 75, of Salisbury, was traveling north on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue heading into town when she failed to stop at the light, according to Salisbury Police Officer M.P. Benjamin.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m.
Gibson, who was in a Chrysler Sebring, struck the right rear of a Ford Explorer driven by Phillip Brown, 26, also of Salisbury, causing it to overturn. The SUV came to rest on its roof.
There were two adults and an infant in Brown’s SUV and three children and two adults in the passenger car.
A passenger inside the SUV, Maria Polk, was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center as a precaution. She has since been treated and released.
Gibson was cited with failure to stop at a red light.
All parties involved were able to free themselves of the vehicles and received minor injuries, Benjamin said.
The wind whipped leaves around and a light rain began to fall as traffic had to be detoured until the vehicles were towed and the roadway opened. A few bystanders took pictures and neighbors looked from their front porches as the officer investigated the crash.
In addition to the Salisbury Police and the Salisbury Fire Department, Rowan County EMS also responded.
