Salisbury graduates Jessica Heilig and Doreen Richardson have helped Gardner-Webb get off to a 3-2 start in women’s basketball.
Heilig is starting and averages 9.2 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. Richardson, a freshman, is playing a lot off the bench and averages 2.8 points and 2.6 rebounds.
? Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) scored 11 points for George Washington in a 48-37 win against USC Upstate.
? Ayana Avery (West Rowan) scored 14 points for Radford in a 70-40 win against Bluefield.
? Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) scored nine points for Charlotte in a 79-60 win against Florida Gulf Coast.
? DaQuondra Cuthbertson (North Rowan) had four points and six rebounds for Fayetteville State in a 67-53 win against Paine.
? De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) had five points and four rebounds for Elizabeth City State in a 65-50 win against Virginia-Lynchburg.
? Brevard’s Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) made a 3-pointer in an 87-72 loss to Delta State and hit another 3 in a 74-63 win against Virginia State.Rio Grande’s Kaleb Kimber (West Rowan) scored eight points in an 85-70 loss to Shawnee State.
? Roanoke’s Alex Weant (Salisbury) scored eight points in just six minutes in a season-opening 87-82 win against Swarthmore.Virginia Union’s Jaques Bostick (NW Cabarrus) was selected to play in the Third Annual FCS Senior Scout Bowl.
The game is at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
A 6-foot, 253-pound defensive lineman, Bostick led Virginia Union with 12 sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Bostick had three sacks against Chowan and made 16 tackles against Elizabeth City State.
? Guilford receiver Adam Smith (Davie)had one of the best freshman seasons in school history and was named second team All-ODAC. Smith caught 65 passes for 874 yards and five TDs.
? Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had three tackles and a quarterback hurry as South Carolina State closed its season with a 27-13 win against Savannah State.
? West Virginia linebacker Jared Barber (Davie) made a season-high seven tackles in a 50-49 loss to Oklahoma.West Rowan’s Alison Sobataka plans to sign with Columbia College in South Carolina. The Fighting Koalas compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and play a schedule that includes Division I schools Coastal Carolina, Campbell and UNC Asheville.
? Davie lost its opening game to Alexander Central 69-53. Pfeiffer signee Amy Steller led the War Eagles with 16 points. Hayleigh Hatfield scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds.Registration continues until Sunday, Nov. 25, for coed indoor soccer leagues for ages 3-14 at Hurley YMCA.

The Patriots (8-3) took advantage of several mistakes by the hapless Jets (4-7). New England scored three TDs in a 52-second span. Julian Edelman returned a fumble for a touchdown.and caught a 56-yard pass for a score before leaving with a head injury. Shane Vereen caught an 83-yard scoring pass, Steve Gregory had a 32-yard fumble return for a TD, Stevan Ridley had a 9-yard run and Wes Welker had a 3-yard scoring grab that helped make Bill Belichick the eighth NFL coach with 200 career victories, including the playoffs. —-
