EAST SPENCER – The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will be asked to approve a lease agreement with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to rent six mobile units during Monday’s meeting.
As the college prepares to begin several construction projects, students will have to be moved out of Building 200, where the Rowan County Early College is housed.
That move is expected to take place at the end of this year so that renovations can get under way in January.
The lease would allow the college to rent the mobile units for $1 through June 2014, when construction is scheduled to be completed.
It states that the units shall be reinstalled in the same place and in the condition in which they were found.
Three of the mobile units will come from Granite Quarry Elementary, two from Hurley Elementary and one East Rowan High School.
They will be moved and set up at the expense of Rowan-Cabarrus.
Gene Miller, the district’s assistant superintendent of operations, said in April that the school system is using 11 fewer mobile units as regular classrooms than it was four years ago.
It is still using a total of 118 district-wide, but for various purposes.
During Monday’s meeting, the school board will also:
• Receive an update on measures of student learning, tests that will be given to student to gauge teacher effectiveness. The state-mandated exams in various subjects will have to be paid for with local funds.
• Consider approving roof replacement projects at Landis and Rockwell elementary schools.
The back two sections of the main building at Landis need to be replaced due to age and condition. The 10,300-square-foot project has a low bid of $107,423.
The gym roof needs to be replaced at Rockwell following a hail storm. The low bid is $48,160 for the 7,000-square-foot roof.
An insurance claim will cover the cost of that project.
• Miller will ask the board to approve a matching funds projects from 33 different schools.
The program allows schools to receive assistance for projects by raising between 30 percent to 50 percent of the cost, which are then matched by the school system.
• School officials will present an overview of the school improvement planning process and discuss the timeline for completion.
The school board meeting at 5 p.m. Monday at the Long Street Administrative Office, 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer.
