Second-seeded Carson won the NPC volleyball tournament on Wednesday, beating previously undefeated North Iredell in the West Iredell gym in the final.
Carson won 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-14 to avenge two earlier losses to North Iredell.
After the Cougars (30-3) dropped the first set, they were trailing 19-16 in the second when Allison Blackwell served nine straight points, including two aces. That was the turning point. Madison Weast had the kill for set point.
Aimee Cloninger had a kill for the deciding point in the second set.
Cloninger had two aces and five kills as Carson rolled in the final set.
“We wanted to be aggressive,” Carson coach Kelan Rogers said. “Hopefully, we can use this as a stepping stone going into the playoffs.”
North Iredell (20-1) played without injured Brooke Redmond (ankle), the NPC Player of the Year in 2011.
It’s the first volleyball championship for the Cougars, who set county and school records with each victory.
Carson will start the state playoffs at home against a No. 2 seed on Saturday.
North Iredell also will be at home Saturday. Redmond’s return is uncertain.
? The Cabarrus Stallions beat the Davidson Guardians 3-0. Emily Messisco had 12 digs and served five aces. Anna Messisco had five kills, 10 assists and five aces. Jessica Chapman had six kills.
? In a 3-1 loss to Woodlawn, the Stallions got 12 assists from Anna Messisco, 10 digs from Emily Messisco, eight kills from Kendyl Parker and seven blocks from Karley Long.
Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys rolled to an 8-0 CCC soccer win against Thomasville on Wednesday.
Bobby Cardelle and Michael Brown scored two goals each. Zack Sukkasem and Clint Comadoll scored one apiece.
Reilly Gokey and Max Fisher added their first varsity goals. Fisher, Salisbury’s keeper, scored on a PK.
Philip Simons had three assists. Comadoll had two, and Luke Hutton and Cardelle had one helper each.
The Hornets (13-2-1, 7-1 CCC) have a big home match against West Davidson tonight.
? In NPC soccer on Wednesday, Statesville beat Carson 4-2; West Rowan edged East Rowan 1-0, and North Iredell topped South Rowan 5-1.
Jayvee soccer
Salisbury’s jayvee soccer team beat Thomasville 3-1 on Wednesday to avenge an earlier loss. Scoring were Watson Pitner, Bryan Fragoso and Ahmedin Salcinovic.
Prep cross country
Robinson’s C.J. Buck won the SPC boys cross country meet held at North Cabarrus Park. Max Chandler (third, 17:01) and Timmy Hall (fifth, 17:15) led A.L. Brown to the team championship. Kellen Corson (ninth), A.J. Meadows (10th) and Johnny Hodge (12th) were the other scorers.
? Robinson won the girls race. A.L. Brown placed third.
Kelsie Simpson placed eighth to lead the Wonders. Briana Landis was 13th.
Robinson’s Natalie Andrejchak was the individual winner in 19:17.
? In the YVC boys championships held at Albemarle’s Morehead Park, Gray Stone’s Josh Rolan placed second (18:31) and the Knights rolled to the team championship.
Gray Stone’s Quinton Parsons was third, while Gray Stone’s Reid Huckabee was fifth.
? Gray Stone’s Sarah Goodnight won the girls race.
Prep golf
Salisbury’s girls won on Wednesday against previously unbeaten Cannon School, the defending independent school state champ. At the Country Club of Salisbury, the Hornets shot 113.
Cannon shot 122, while 4A Greensboro Grimsley shot 143.
Grace Yatawara shot even-par 35 to lead the Hornets and was the medalist.
Other Salisbury scorers were Isabella Rusher (37) and Madeline Hoskins (41).
Kate Collam shot 40 to lead Cannon. Shannon Paylor shot 40 to lead the Whirlies.
Cannon was the only team to defeat Salisbury in 2011.
Prep tennis
In East Rowan’s 6-0 win at Morganton Patton in the first round of the 3A dual team playoffs, the singles winners were Lizzie Weaver, Rebecca Agner, Laura Agner, Hannah Pressley, Drew Pethel and Jasmine Cooper.
East (14-1) will be at home in the second round against Boiling Springs Crest (12-1).
College basketball
Wingate was named the favorite in the SAC men’s basketball race on Wednesday. Wingate got five first-place votes.
Lincoln Memorial, Newberry, Carson-Newman and Anderson followed the Bulldogs in the poll and got one first-place vote each.
Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum, Catawba, Brevard and Mars Hill rounded out the poll.
Catawba’s Tyrece Little is a preseason second-team pick.
First-teamers were Carson-Newman’s Antoine Davis and Ishmael Sanders, Wingate’s Odell Turner, Newberry’s Dondray Walker, Lincoln Memorial’s Vincent Bailey and Anderson’s Denzail Jones.
? Barton, King and Mount Olive were tabbed as the top three teams in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll.
Pfeiffer was picked eighth.
College golf
Catawba tied for seventh in a 15-team field in the State Farm Intercollegiate in Pineville, Ky. Zach Griffis (76-74) and Marshall Ritchie (80-70) shot 150s to lead the Indians.
College soccer
Mary Kirkman scored twice to lead Catawba’s women’s team to 3-1 win against Lees-MCrae on Wednesday. Catawba (9-6) also got a goal from Athena Bless.
? Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 2-0 at Mount Olive. The Indians played a man down most of the second half after a red card.
7th-grade football
Bryant Young passed for more than 200 yards and three TDs – in the first half – in West Rowan Middle’s 42-0 win against Erwin.
Owen White caught a 55-yard TD pass. Brandon Wallace caught a 50-yard TD pass, and Anthony Renegar hauled in a 40-yard scoring aerial.
Devin Turner and Malcolm Ingram scored on 15-yard runs. Dalton Pratt returned a fumble 52 yards for a score.
Ingram, Wallace and Cole Myers added conversions.
Other offensive leaders were Hunter Davis, Dillon Simpson, Jacob Ollenberger, Eli Walton and Ethan Adkins.
Leading the defense were Renegar, Wallace, Turner, Pratt, White, Josiah Dixon and Caleb Mauldin,
White picked off a pass, and Renegar recovered a fumble.
West (5-1) plays North Rowan Middle next week.
8th-grade football
Erwin defeated West Rowan Middle 8-6.
QB Max Wall scored the Erwin TD on a keeper. Tay Davis added the conversion and made a game-saving interception in the end zone..
Steve Hardin and Norman Kelly recovered fumbles for the Eagles (5-1).
The Eagles will take on Corriher-Lipe next week. Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be recognized.
?Knox edged China Grove 12-6.
Cameron Horne and Alonzo Sirleaf had long scoring runs for the Trojans.
Simeon Caldwell, Kenderreck Patterson, Jaylen McDowell, Austin Coleman, Jared Wallace and Raheim Hovis led the blocking. Fullback D’Lang Williams excelled running and blocking.
The Knox defense had a momentum-swinging goal-line stand late in the first half. Caldwell and Patterson recovered fumbles. Paris Hillie picked off a pass to seal the victory. Knox is at Mooresville next week.
Middle school softball
West Rowan Middle won 6-4 against China Grove on Wednesday.
Parker Greene hit a three-run homer over the fence in center field. Emy Spry, Khara Fesperman, Leyna Pence, Victoria Moore, Katie Williams and Morgan Corriher had hits for the Bulldogs.
? Carlee Brawley pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Mooresville (13-0) to an 11-0 win against Erwin. Lauren Sulek and Kaitlyn Pennell had two hits each for the Imps. The middle school tournament starts Monday in Mooresville.
Local golf
After two rounds of a First Stage PGA Q-School qualifier at the Club at Irish Creek, Jason Millard leads at 10-under. He has shot 66-66 – 132.
Will Collins stands at 75-73 – 148, while Frank Adams is at 76-75 – 151.
Baseball camp
The East Rowan Mustangs and East Rowan Diamond Sports are partnering for a one-day baseball camp on Saturday, Nov. 3 with the goal of striking out hunger.
The camp will be held from 9-12 at Staton Field, with registration from 8:30-9 a.m.
The camp is for ages 5-14 and will be run by coach Brian Hightower and East players.
Admission is two canned food items per child. Suggested items are canned fruit, meat or soup, cereal and peanut butter.
Lunch will be provided from 12-1.
The rain date is Nov. 10.
Youth cross country
The 1st annual Halloween Dash Youth Cross Country Meet will be held at Salisbury Community Park on Oct. 27.

City tennnis tournaments
Dates for the city of Salisbury Junior Tennis Championships are Dec. 7-9.
There are boys and girls singles divisions for ages 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 and boys and girls doubles divisions for 12, 14, 16 and 18.
The entry fee for singles is $25. The entry fee for doubles is $12 per person.
The entry deadline is Dec. 3.

Hoops fundraiser
Support the Salisbury Hornets boys basketball team Saturday at Wal-Mart.
Basketball goals will be set up and the team will sponsor a free-throw shooting contest.
Krispy Kreme doughnuts cards will be sold.
East Y programs
The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan branch is now taking registrations for Little Shooters basketball and girls basketball.
Little Shooters is for boys and girls, ages 4-6.
Girls basketball is for ages 7-14.
Registration ends Saturday, Oct. 27
No Saturday games or practices.
