SALISBURY – City Council members will learn how the city did in the first quarter of the new fiscal year when they meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, 217 S. Main St.
City Manager Doug Paris and other city staff will present the first quarter financial update, including revenue and subscriber numbers for Fibrant, the city’s new broadband utility that sells Internet, phone and cable TV services. The new fiscal year started July 1.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, City Council will:
• Receive a 2012 Great Places in America Award from the American Planning Association recognizing downtown Salisbury in the Great Neighborhoods category.
• Appropriate a $154,500 grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce Grant for Henkel Corporation. The state money goes through local government for appropriation once criteria for an economic incentive grant are met.
The city and Rowan Economic Development Commission worked together in 2009 to secure an incentive grant for Henkel.
The EDC in June asked the city to delay the city’s cash incentive with Henkel to give the company more time to meet its goals.
City Council agreed to bump the five-year incentive deal back to 2013. Construction and installation of equipment required more time than initially projected, said Robert Van Geons, EDC executive director.
Henkel plans a separate expansion that would invest several million dollars in new equipment and create six additional jobs, Van Geons said.
As part of the modified grant agreement, Henkel committed to a new investment of $28 million, creation of 108 new jobs by June 2013 and the retention of 81 existing jobs, up from the $25 million investment and 103 jobs the company first planned, Van Geons said.
• Receive an application from David Stewart for a permit to operate a pool hall with eight tables at 1708 E. Innes St. and set a public hearing for Nov. 6.
• Consider a request from Patricia Lyerly and the city of Salisbury to rezone five parcels bound by Statesville Boulevard, Wood Avenue, Edgewood Drive and Rose Lane from general residential to residential mixed-use for a new counseling office. City Council will hold a public hearing.
• Receive public comment about any topic.
• Recognize BlockWork as the city’s 2012 Make a Difference Day project.
