This is a big week for Salisbury soccer, which will play three times at home.
Salisbury takes on Lexington tonight, battles Thomasville on Wednesday and makes up a huge postponed match with West Davidson on Thursday.
Salisbury and West Davidson are tied for first in the six-team Central Carolina Confernce with 5-1 records.
Salisbury lost 1-0 to West Davidson on Sept. 19. West Davidson dropped an overtime match to Lexington on Sept. 24.
Salisbury has won eight straight CCC championships and 10 out of 11. West Iredell won the CCC in 2003, with the Hornets finishing second.
Salisbury has ruled the league a long time, but the Green Dragons are strong challengers this season. Salisbury is 11-2-1, while West Davidson 9-2-3. See Scoreboard.
? Third-place Carson (9-7, 7-3) is doing well in the NPC and has a big match with second-place Statesville on Wednesday. West Iredell is still unbeaten in the league.
Prep volleyball
It’s volleyball tournament week. First-round NPC and CCC games will be played tonight, with higher seeds at home.
The biggest game is NPC No. 5 seed Statesville at No. 4 South Rowan at 6 p.m. The winner is headed to the state playoffs, while the loser will ends its season.
The teams tied for fourth in the regular season and split with each other. South won at Statesville the last day of the regular season to move into a tie for fourth.
Carson, the NPC No. 2 seed, hosts West Rowan tonight. East Rowan is at No. 3 seed West Iredell.
Semifinals and the championship match will be staged at West Iredell.
? Undefeated North Iredell’s middle blocker Madison Vaughn committed to UNC Asheville.
? Salisbury is having a good year. Seeded third in the CCC tournament, the Hornets will host the No. 6 seed (Thomasville or Lexington) tonight.
The tournament moves to Central Davidson for the semifinals (Tuesday) and championship (Wednesday).
The volleyball playoffs start on Saturday.
Local golf
In the 3rd Tar Heel Youth Golf Association State Championship held at Lexington’s Sapona Ridge Country Club, Logan Shuping shot 78-77 – 155 and finished 28th.
Shuping is ninth-grader.
Seventh-grader Michael Childress shot 75-85 – 160 and finished tied for 37th.
Raleigh’s Zach Seabolt, a senior, shot 66-72 – 138 to win the event.
? Sophomore Isabella Rusher shot 75-82 – 157 and tied for 12th in the girls state championship at Sapona. Freshman Grace Yatawara shot 79-79 – 158 and tied for 15th.
Reagan junior Victoria Allred, who won the 4A individual championship last fall, shot 73-71 – 144 to win the event.
? The McCanless Couples played with a two-person Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
David Huneycutt and Susan Houston were the winning team. Frank Foster and Roy Green finished second.
Shelia Livengood won the longest putt. Foster won closest to the pin.
Middle school softball
West Rowan Middle defeated Southeast 14-6.
Emy Spry, Parker Greene, Lindsey VonCanon, Mandy Timmerman, Al Arrington, Khara Fesperman, Leyna Pence, Savannah Cline, Megan Brown, Braelyn Faust and Katie Williams had hits for the Bulldogs.
West plays Knox on Tuesday at West.
Youth soccer
The Green Dragon soccer team played Satuday against Charlotte United Football Club and won behind excellent goalkeeping by Will Webb.
Maddox Goodnight, Ben Childress and Colin Donaldson scored goals. Griffin Smith controlled the midfield.
