Former West Rowan star K.P. Parks did what he could to end Virginia’s four-game losing streak, but Maryland still prevailed Saturday 27-20.
Parks had a career best 129 yards of his team’s 169 on the ground.
But it wasn’t enough to offset the big plays by Stephon Diggs and others. Along with the kickoff return, Diggs had a dazzling 60-yard catch-and-run to set up the Maryland field goal that made it 17-0 late in the first quarter.
“That was a great start, and to get the first three scores, to put 17 up,” said Terps coach Randy Edsall said.
Virginia held the Terrapins to minus-2 yards rushing and 235 yards overall, but a 100-yard kickoff return by Stefon Diggs and some big plays in the passing game by fellow freshman Perry Hills were more than enough to compensate.
Hills was 14 of 26 for 237 yards and one touchdown as Maryland (4-2, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) extended Virginia’s losing streak to five games and all but ended their hopes of making a bowl game. Diggs had four catches for 89 yards, including a nifty 60-yarder that led to the field goal that put the Cavaliers (2-5, 0-3) in a 17-point hole late in the first quarter.
Parks was at a loss to explain the Cavaliers’red-zone difficulties.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – EJ Manuel threw for a career-high 439 yards and four touchdowns and kicker Dustin Hopkins became the Atlantic Coast Conference’s career scoring leader Saturday as 12th-ranked Florida State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 51-7 victory over Boston College.
Manuel completed 27 of 34 passes before leaving early in the fourth quarter with a 48-7 lead.
Florida State (6-1, 3-1 ACC) didn’t waste any time shaking off over last week’s 17-16 loss at North Carolina State, rolling to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter before Boston College (1-5, 0-3) scored its touchdown on Chase Rettig’s 18-yard pass to Bobby Swigert.
Hopkins passed the league scoring record of 393 points with a 51-yard field goal.
Hopkins boosted his career total to 402 points and now stands fifth all-time in the NCAA. He also erased a pair of Florida State career marks that stood for 25 years, both previously held by Derrick Schmidt. GREENVILLE – Shane Carden tossed five touchdowns and threw for 308 yards as East Carolina trounced Memphis 41-7 Saturday in Conference USA action.
Despite posting minus-9 yards rushing in the first half, East Carolina (4-3, 3-1) outgained Memphis (1-5, 1-1) 236-105 before the break as the Pirates built a 17-0 advantage.
Shane Carden was 16 of 21 for 245 yards with two passing scores in the half.
Justin Hardy was Carden’s favorite target, pulling in five passes for 126 yards and a score in the first half. Hardy caught just one ball in the second half – an 11-yard touchdown.
Carden’s other first-half score went to Justin Jones for 39 yards.
That duo would hook up twice more in the second half, as Jones reeled in scoring catches of 14 and fouryards.
Marcus Rucker caught seven passes for 88 yards for Memphis, which has lost seven straight to East Carolina.
