East Rowan competed in the N.C. Runners Elite Cross Country Carnival on Saturday at Kernersville’s Beeson Park.
East sophomore Conor Honeycutt won the race for 9th and 10th graders that is considered the unofficial “state jayvee championship.”
Honeycutt was clocked in 16:30.31 and won by nine seconds. East’s Jason Troutman was 16th in the race for 9th and 10th-graders.
Cal Meyers (16:41) finished seventh and led East to a fifth-place finish in the invitational race. Justin Allen was 20th. Other top finishers were Justin Basso (28th). Graham Lyerly (44th) and Caleb Payton (85th).
East will compete in the NPC Championships on Wednesday at Statesville’s MacAnderson Park.
Prep tennis
After completing an undefeated regular season, Gray Stone’s girls tennis team competed in the YVC tournament and qualified their top six – Meghan Hedgepeth, Libby Fowler, Brooke Herlocker, Jordan DeJaco, Caby Styers and Rachel Poston – for 1A regional competition.
Hegdepeth, a sophomore, won her second straight YVC singles title.
Prep volleyball
The Cabarrus Stallions beat Countryside 3-0.
Anna Messisco had five digs, six kills, 10 assists and six aces. Emily Messisco had six digs and 14 service points, including four aces.
Jessica Chapman had five kills. Kendyl Parker had three blocks.
Local golf
In the first round of the 3rd Tar Heel Youth Golf Association State Championship at Lexington’s Sapona Ridge Country Club on Saturday, Michael Childress (Class of 2018) shot 75 to tie for 15th.
Logan Shuping (2016) shot 78 and is tied for 28th.
Raleigh’s Zach Seabolt (2013) shot 66 for the lead.
?The 2nd annual “Tee Off for a Veteran” golf tournament will be held at Warrior on Oct. 20.
The format is Captain’s Choice, with four-man and two-man teams and individuals welcome.
Registration is at 11 a.m. Lunch and a silent auction are at 12:15. A shotgun start is set for 1:30 p.m.
The cost is $90 per person. Lots of prizes and awards.

Catawba roundup
Tusculum’s women’s soccer won 1-0 against visiting Catawba (8-6, 3-4).
? Catawba’s men’s soccer team (7-4-3, 2-2-3) fell 1-0 at Tusculum on Saturday. Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) made three saves.
? Catawba’s volleyball team (7-10, 4-5 SAC) fell to Lincoln Memorial in four sets on Saturday. Catawba’s volleyball team won in five sets against Carson-Newman on Friday, with Kaitlyn Whitmer recording 23 kills and five blocks.
College volleyball
Averett played twice in Raleigh on Saturday.
Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) had 33 assists and seven digs in a win against Merdith and 31 assists and seven digs in a loss to Maryville.
? Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kayla Morrow (South) had five kills and three blocks in a 3-1 loss to Newberry on Friday and four kills and eight digs in a 3-2 win against Anderson on Saturday.
? Guilford swept Hollins on Friday. Guilford’s Taylor Whitley (Carson) had 24 assists and 12 digs. Hollins’ Lela Moore (West Rowan) had 17 assists and 11 digs. Whitley had 22 assists and 15 digs in Guilford’s 3-0 loss to Roanoke on Saturday.
College cross country
USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) ran 26:23 in the 8k Upstate Invitational and placed third.
