SALISBURY – David Ramsey has a special place in his heart for Rowan County Meals on Wheels, a United Way supported agency.
His mother, Ann Ramsey, received services from the agency, prior to her death.
Ramsey, a Rowan County native and a chief deputy with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, routinely donates to the United Way campaign and on Wednesday his name was pulled to be in the running to receive a car.
During each campaign report meeting a volunteer draws names and those names are placed in a pool of other finalists. Anyone who makes a contribution to the campaign of $52 or more has a chance to win a car.
In addition to Ramsey, Donnie Talley and Jennifer Cline, both of Freightliner, were also chosen.
Ramsey said right now he doesn’t need a car, but is certain he has some family who could use a car. He is grateful to Meals on Wheels.
“It probably prolonged her life. I don’t know what she would’ve done with out it,” he said. His mother actually told him she felt Meals on Wheels prolonged her life. His mother was a two-time breast cancer survivor.
He’s also a contributor to Relay for Life. He believes the agency has a lot of good programs that receive those United Way funds.
Talley, a native of Woodleaf, said he found out about the drawing from someone in the personnel department.
“I feel pretty blessed,” he said. Talley is a regular contributor to the United Way campaign.
“There’s a lot of people in need right now. There’s a lot less fortunate people out there and working at Freightliner I feel pretty fortunate,” he said.
Cline said she received a phone call on Wednesday.
“Honestly and truthfully I forgot all about it – the drawing,” she said. Cline is excited about it. She knows someone in her family, an aunt who could use a car.
She, too, is a regular United Way campaign contributor. She gives because, “we get paid decent money and you never know when you might need help. If you can help someone else out that’s fine,” she said.
Once the final 12 names have been drawn, one person will win a car from one of four participating dealerships. The four Salisbury dealers are Ben Mynatt Nissan, Team Chevrolet, Gerry Wood Auto Group and Cloninger Ford/Toyota.
