Eighteen new members were inducted into Catawba College’s Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, during an initiation ceremony held Sept. 21 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the college’s annual Family Weekend.
The organization’s 2012-2013 president, senior Elizabeth J. White of Salisbury, officiated, assisted by faculty sponsor Dr. Margaret L. Stahr and faculty advisers Dr. Barry Sang and Dr. James Stringield. Theatre Arts Professor David Pulliam delivered the homily for the ceremony, “Thimble, care, forks and hope or how to hunt a Snark.”
Alpha Chi member Lindsay Smith of Salisbury delivered the invocation, while White brought words of greeting and introduction.
Candidates initiated include seniors Joseph Vincent Beam of Wilkesboro; Katie Elizabeth Marlowe of Newton, and Blanche Schwarz of Statesville. Juniors initiated included Megan Mackenzie Bean of Kannapolis; Kyle Frederick Griewisch of Banner Elk; Lindsay Catherine King of Kannapolis; Luke Mitchell Kooyman of Salt Lake City, Utah; Brendan Charles Lawson of Charlotte; Nicholas Grant Luciano of Concord, Allijah Gonzalez Motika of Asheville; Olivia Jordan Myers of Lexington; Laurel Boykin Powell of Mooresville; Jacob Robert Regensburger of Fayetteville; Cristin Andrea Ritchie of Salisbury; Anna Clare Toole of Raleigh; Frank Villa Hernandez of Kannapolis; Ashley Elizabeth Wietbrock of Salisbury; and Julio Cesar Zubillaga of China Grove.
Catawba’s Omicron Chapter was founded in May 1978 with the induction of 13 members. To date, 638 members have been inducted. Alpha Chi inducts no more than the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors from all academic fields. Founded in 1922, the society has active chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in 45 states and Puerto Rico.Two faculty members from Catawba College’s Ralph W. Ketner School of Business recently attended a conference regarding business school and program accreditation.
Dr. Pam Thompson, Dean of the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business, and Professor Darin Spencer, CPA, attended the annual Regional 3 Annual Conference of the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) in Asheville, Sept. 21 and 22. “The pursuit of ACBSP accreditation reinforces a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and scholarship.” (acbsp.org) Catawba’s Ralph W. Ketner School of Business is in the candidacy phase of the ACBSP accreditation process.
