Two men driving garbage trucks early this morning collided on U.S. 601, sending both men to the hospital with minor injuries.
Reginald Everhart, 32, of Scaley Bark Drive, Salisbury, was driving a 2007 Max Garbage truck with Republic Waste Services, south on U.S. 601 just north of West Ridge Road. Republic Waste Services is based in Winston-Salem.
Everhart failed to reduce his speed and struck the rear of a garbage truck driven by David Carr, according to the Highway Patrol.
Carr, 45, of Depot Street, Rockwell, was driving a 2004 Crane garbage truck with Morrison’s Garbage Service. Morrison’s is based in Salisbury.
Carr was stopped partially in the roadway picking up trash, said Trooper B.P. Potts of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Trooper E.B. Perdue investigated the collision. The collision occurred at 3:50 a.m., but the roadway wasn’t opened until 8:29 a.m. Potts said traffic was detoured.
There was a fuel spill; as of 11:30 a.m., cleanup crews were still at the site.
The truck Carr was driving overturned onto its left side and came to rest in the roadway. A large wrecker was called in to right the truck, Potts said.
Everhart was charged with failure to reduce speed. The garbage truck he drove had extensive damage.
Neither man was ejected from either truck, but both were taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
