Area Sports Briefs: East nips West in NPC golf

In NPC golf on Monday at McCanless, East Rowan shot 146 and nipped West Rowan by one stroke in difficult conditions.
Emily Cleveland’s 44 led the Mustangs. Kathrine Marcum and Grace Stokes shot 51s.
Kayla Boley’s 44 led West.
Neely Holloway shot 51, while Kelly Boley and Savannah Lloyd shot 52s.
Carson shot 164 for sixth.
Adison Collins shot 52 to lead the Cougars.
Amber Reeder shot 55. Katlyn Smith and Alisha Sears shot 57s.
Evelyn Stein’s 46 led third-place Statesville.
South Rowan’s Kolby Fisher shot 58, and Whitney Parks shot 60.
In the season standings, West Rowan holds an 11-shot lead over East and a 25 shot lead over Statesville.
Salisbury also played at McCanless and shot 117.
Isabella Rusher shot 36. Madeline Hoskins shot 40, and Grace Yatawara shot 41,
Brooke Smith shot 46.
Salisbury will be the favorite when the county championships are contested on Thursday.
College tennis
Wheaton College freshman Erika Nelson (Salisbury) won the No. 3 doubles championship for the Central Conference of Illinois.
Wheaton teamed with Lauren Slabach.
Nelson helped Wheaton win its 18th straight conference title.
College football
Averett cornerback Zack Grkman (Carson) was named USA South Defensive Player of the Week for Averett’s 14-7 win against LaGrange on Saturday.
Grkman, a junior, intercepted passes to thwart LaGrange’s last two drives of the game. Both picks came in the final seven minutes, and he returned one 32 yards.
He also collected three solo tackles and two pass breakups in the win.
Prep volleyball
Salisbury’s varsity team beat Lexington 3-0.
The Hornets’ jayvees also swept the Yellow Jackets.
• Carson plays at West Rowan tonight. The Cougars (25-1, 9-1) need a win to keep alive their hopes of sharing the NPC title. Carson plays at unbeaten North Iredell on Thursday.
Local golf
Michael Childress played in the U.S. Kids PGA National Junior Invitational Tournament in Florida.
Childress shot 80-82 – 162 to finish 15th.
Childress will play in the state junior tournament at Sapona this weekend.
• The McCanless Couples played a three-man Texas Scramble on Sunday.
The winning team members were Frank Foster, Harry Owen and Ricky Honeycutt.
Second place went to the team of Tim Earnhardt, Donna Mundy and Larry Mundy.
Closest to the pin was won by Owen.
• The McCanless Ladies Golg Club completed their two-day championship Sunday.
The First Flight was won by Robin Leslie, with Susan Houston placing a close second.
In the Championship Flight, Mechelle Kuld, Kristi Laton and Sharon Miller tied for first.
Laton won the scorecard playoff and was named club champion for 2012. Miller placed second.
