Lee Street Theatre, in collaboration with TapRoot Ensemble, presents “Dix, A Story of the Back-Ward Women,” the east coast premiere of an original play by Salisbury playwright and poet Janice Fuller.
Originally written and developed in 2004 for the Minneapolis Fringe Festival, “Dix” explores the lives of nurses and patients at the Dorothea Dix Hospital. The play was inspired by the life and poetry of Dorothea Dix Hospital nurse Juanita Tobin Brown.This rough and raw piece embraces the humanity of the women as each story of brokenness and pain manifests itself onstage. The latest incarnation features further developments in the story of an older nurse, based on Brown herself, and a younger nurse meeting patients who share their stories of love, loss and survival. Lee Street Theatre is excited to partner with new Charlotte Theatre group, Taproot Ensemble, which will premier a new perspective on this text with additions and developments that arise from a focus on devised theatre. Brianna Smith directs.The cast includes Kathleen Tronsor,Wendy Weant, Mary Alice Nichols, Carleigh Rose and Elizabeth Payton.
The play opens tonight, Oct. 4 and continues Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. at the Looking Glass Artist Center’s Black Box Theatre, located at 405 N. Lee St.
