SALISBURY – Parents will be the students Wednesday during a session about the importance of positive parenting.
National guest speaker LeAnn Nickelsen will hold a presentation during the Rowan-Salisbury School System’s first Parent Matters event from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the J.F. Hurley Family YMCA.
Nickelsen will talk about how having the right mindset can help motivate students to achieve in school.
Kelly Feimster, media director for the school system, said the district will host a total of four sessions for parents throughout the year at various locations in the county.
“This is going to give parents a chance to enhance their skills and work in collaboration with the school system,” she said.
Jerri Hunt, the district’s staff development director, said the events are designed to increase parental involvement, foster networking between parents and empower parents to become effective advocates for their students.
Feimster said Parents Matters is based on the parent university concept used throughout the United States.
“We are always looking for ways to strengthen our partnerships with parents and the community to help support education in Rowan County,” she said.
Parents Matter topics will include issues such as safety, health, academics, communication and technology.
“We will actually conduct a parent survey to find out what topics are important to them,” Hunt said.
Feimster said each session will include vendors from the community such as Communities in Schools of Rowan County and Rowan County Youth Services Bureau.
Superintendent Dr. Judy Grissom said child care will be available Wednesday for those who need to bring their children. There will also be light refreshments.
Feimster said parents can find out what kind of sessions are coming up by visiting the school system’s homepage at www.rss.k12.nc.us and clicking the “Parent Matters” icon.
“The website will be updated on a regular basis with events, times and locations,” she said.
