SPENCER – The Spencer Doll and Toy Museum, has added two North Rowan High School seniors, Catherine Crawford and Fayelessa Shropshire, as interns.
The seniors are leaders in the North Rowan Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and learned about the internship through their academic club adviser, Lisa Cline.
Both students have been involved in DECA for several years and will work on a variety of marketing projects for the museum. Crawford, president of NR Deca Club, says her interest stemmed from the desire to “gain some real world experience before graduating.”
Shropshire, vice president of public relations for DECA, wants to be a journalist. “It’s one thing to do a marketing project in class but it’s another to do real work in local business” she says.
The interns will spend an hour and half at the museum each day. The positions are unpaid. The intern curriculum includes an orientation to the goals and mission of the musuem and an overview of the marketing objectives.
Some of their responsibilities include writing and distributing articles; writing and syndicating press releases; collecting and maintaining a database of media contacts; researching and contacting new media and blogging contacts; blogging; reporting activities and work to their adviser.
The interns are working on two events – a Halloween costume parade and a 100th anniversary celebration for Girl Scouts.
