East Spencer Fire Department shuts down temporarily

EAST SPENCER – Salisbury Fire Department is running fire calls for East Spencer today after the town’s chief stopped its service Monday evening.
The shutdown was prompted by an internal dispute between some firefighters and Chief Shawn McBride, Town Administrator Macon Samons said today.
“The chief made the decision that that was the best way to handle the situation,” Sammons said. “He had some requirements of them that one or more didn’t want to follow.”
He said he expects East Spencer’s fire service to be restored Wednesday, but it will be McBride’s decision.
“The basic point is that we are covered with our mutual aid agreements,” Sammons said. “Calls are going to be covered.”
At least one firefighter and a receptionist were at the station this afternoon, along with the town’s parked firetrucks.
Phone calls to McBride, East Spencer Mayor Barbara Mallett, Rowan County Communications Director Rob Robinson, Rowan County Emergency Services Director Frank Thomason and Salisbury Fire Chief Bob Parnell were not immediately returned this afternoon.
