Special recycling day
Rowan County’s 2012 special waste recycling event will be Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Rowan County Recycling Processing Center in East Spencer.
Sponsored by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department, NCDA/CS and the Department of Environmental Management, it is free to Rowan County citizens, and will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 1102 N. Long St. Ext.
Household quantities only will be accepted of prescription medications, non-prescription medications, tires (limit five, no rims), fire extinguishers; helium, oxygen or propane tanks, all computer equipment, cellphones, rechargeable batteries (only); all electronics (anything with a plug); thermometers, thermostats, labeled pesticides, paint (10 gallons maximum per household), fluorescent bulbs, labeled fertilizers, televisions, VCRs, DVRs, washers, dryers, refrigerators, eyeglasses, hearing aids, toner cartridges.

SPENCER – The nonprofit Spencer Partnership will hold the Spencer Community Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at Park Plaza.
All proceeds will go to the N.C. Transportation Museum.
Sixty booths are available for $15. Tables cost an additional $5 each.

New Guardians ad Litem
Eight newly trained Guardians ad Litem were sworn in by Judge Kevin Eddinger on Aug. 30, to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in Rowan and Cabarrus County courtrooms. The trainees completed a 30-hour training program which included court observation and information on all aspects of their volunteer service. The next training class is scheduled to begin on Oct. 15.
