West End to hear plan update

SALISBURY – Organizers of the West End Neighborhood Transformation Plan will update the community on their progress at a public meeting Tuesday.
The Salisbury Housing Authority and the city of Salisbury landed a $170,000 federal grant last year to come up with a plan for transforming the West End neighborhood, including demolishing and rebuilding Civic Park Apartments.
Salisbury is now competing for an $18 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to implement the plan.
In a related application, the city, housing authority and Salisbury Police Department have collaborated with the West End to compete for a $600,000 Byrne Department of Justice Innovation Grant for crime prevention at the neighborhood level.
The transformation plan steering committee will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the West End Business & Community Center, 1400 W. Bank St.
The agenda will include:
? Update on summer activities, including the West End Community Garden and the West End coordinator position.
The Robertson Family Foundation awarded the city $140,000 over two years to create a new organization to head up the transformation of the West End neighborhood.
? Status of the Choice Neighborhood and Byrne grant applications
? Opportunities for transformation, including a federally qualified health care clinic, Civic Park design process and Knox Middle School program
? Next steps, including transformation plan development and upcoming conferences.
