The first fall race in Rowan County drew runners and walkers to Salisbury Community Park on Saturday morning for the Race for Babies 5K.
Rowan Regional Medical Center was the presenting sponsor for both the 5K and the fun run, allowing participants to race together for stronger and healthier babies through the March of Dimes fundraising efforts.
Anthony Famiglietti was first overall in 15 minutes and 42 seconds.
He was followed by Josh Readling in 19:11 and Phillip Straight in 19:43. Famigletti is a two time United States Olympian in the Steeplechase event.
He also won the North Carolina Road Runners Club of America 5K State Championship in Salisbury in 2011.
Women’s winners were Karen Underwood in 19 minutes and 23 seconds, Acquawon Stallworth in 23:33 and Brunetta Franklin in 27:30. The top three male and female winners all received cash prizes.
Famiglietti and Underwood reside in Davidson. Underwood is returning to competitive racing following the recent birth of their baby. Famiglietti has now shifted his training emphasis to the marathon.
Sabrin Thomas was the official race starter after being born prematurely at just over one pound in weight.
Other sponsors were Salisbury Parks and Recreation and the Salisbury Rowan Runners.
