Area Sports Briefs: North, Salisbury, West claim jayvee victories

Staff and wire reports
Salisbury’s jayvee football team beat Carson 28-7 on Thursday.
Willie Clark had two touchdown runs for the Hornets (4-1). Clark scored on bursts of 55 and 8 yards.
Daeshaude White scored on a 65-yard dash on Salisbury’s first play from scrimmage.
A.J. Hill ran 58 yards for a score on Salisbury’s initial play of the second half.
Matt Woolly kicked four PATs.
• North Rowan’s jayvees beat East Montgomery 26-13.
Jaleel Hitchens had two interceptions for North and returned one for a touchdown.
Jake Pritchard and Dylan Riley were other standouts on defense for the Cavaliers.
Ty Corpening paced the offense, rushing 20 times for 139 yards and two TDs.
Trey Stoner threw a touchdown pass to Lee Sells.
• West Rowan topped South Rowan 24-9.
Daniel Flanagan and Kacey Otto had rushing TDs for the Falcons. Kevin Gaillard had a pick-six.
Amos Duncan ran for a pair of two-point conversions.
Johnathan Johnson caused a safety.
Gaillard, Johnson and J.T. Sanders led West’s defense.
Qwan Rhyne scored South’s TD. Brennan Lambert kicked a 42-yard field goal. Yes, 42 yards.
• A.L. Brown shut out Central Cabarrus 19-0.
R.J. Fowler and Tyren Washington led Brown’s offense, but the story was the defense.
Corie Goss had a pick-six, Agyei Baruti made a half-dozen big stops, and Da’Shaquan Campbell had two sacks.
• East Rowan lost 22-7 to West Iredell.
Dominique Morrow scored the Mustangs’ TD on a fumble return.
Prep volleyball
Salisbury swept Thomasville for a CCC victory on Thursday.
Bria Gardner had eight kills. Olivia Smith had 16 service points. Gardner, Cortney Gillispie and Nyasia Harris had three blocks each.
Prep tennis
South Rowan beat North Iredell 6-3 in NPC tennis on Thursday.
Bethany Karriker, Madison Brewer, Sara Bradley and Taylor James won in singles.
Aspen Musala-Brewer and Bradley-James were doubles winners. See Scoreboard.
Prep cross country
East Rowan’s girls won in an NPC cross country match at North Iredell on Thursday.
East’s score was 33. The Mustangs topped North Iredell (42), Statesville (59) and South Rowan (104).
East scorers were Faith Blume (first, 23:54), Tori Gaul (second, 24:27), Leah Bumby (eighth), Katlie Neigel (10th) and Haley Lyerly (12th).
South was led by Casey Pruitt (ninth) and Olivia Sides (15th).
• East also won the boys meet, posting a score of 20.
South (52), North Iredell (75), Statesville (112) and West Iredell 9118) followed.
Scorers for East were Chance Brown (second, 19:07), Cal Meyers (third, 19:10), Josh Rowell (fourth, 19:26), Jason Basso (fifth, 20:02) and Darin Basso (sixth, 20:03).
South’s Angel Ruiz (18:51) was the individual winner.
Other top runners for South were Kurtis Reed (12th), Steven Lyons (14th), Ian Blumenthal (20th) and Dustin Jenkins (22nd).
Prep golf
Salisbury’s girls shot 119 at Starmount Forest in Greensboro and beat Grimsley.
The Whirlies shot 140.
Grace Yatawara led the Hornets with a 38. Also scoring were Madeline Hoskins (40) and Isabella Rusher (41).
Shannon Paylor’s 40 led the Whirlies.
7th-grade football
North Rowan Middle rolled 40-14 against Erwin.
Jayden Jones scored on touchdown runs of 88, 85 and 28 yards, and Xavier Haley had scoring runs of 60 and 57 yards.
Dadrian Campbell ran back an interception 45 yards for a score.
McGwire Smith passed to Travis London for a conversion. Jones ran for a conversion.
Campbell, Dawson Hoover, Brett Lawson, Lee Kennedy and Shy’Kim Coney led the North defense.
North is at Southeast next week.
8th-grade football
West Rowan Middle thumped Corriher-Lipe 34-0.
Armoni Hogue had TD runs of 17 and 36 yards.
Kortez Weeks scored on a 46-yard run and a 65-yard punt return.
Rodney Howell returned a kickoff 65 yards for a score.
Hogue and Weeks added two-point conversions.
Hogue and Colton Hartsell made fumble recoveries.
Xavier Jones also had a big rushing day.
Offensive standouts for the Bulldogs included Timmy Wilmont, DeAndre Snowden and Alex Barrier.
Defensive standouts included Howell, Hunter Brown, Avery Allen, Javon Lofton, Cameron Butler and Tyler Nicholas.
Robbie Coburn and Tyler Wheeler stood out on special teams for the Bulldogs.
West is at Knox next week.
Middle school softball
West Rowan Middle beat Knox 19-2 on Thursday.
Khara Fesperman struck out eight and was the winning pitcher.
Katie Williams had three hits. Lindsey VonCanon had two.
West is home against North Rowan Middle on Monday.
Middle school volleyball
Salisbury Academy topped Concordia Christian 25-21 and 25-23.
The Jaguars rallied to win the second set.
Madison Day led the offense in the first set.
Serves by Sharmi Armin turned momentum in the second set.
The Jaguars (6-0) play at home on Wednesday against Sacred Heart.
Middle school tennis
Southeast’s girls defeated North Rowan Middle 8-1.
Singles winners were Mackenzie Koontz, Brienne Leach, Lindsay Elmore. Alexis Witt and Abby Johnson.
Koontz-Leach, Keelee Morgan-Elmore and Cheng-Taylor.
• Salisbury Academy’s girls won 7-2 against Winston-Salem’s Summit School.
Maria Capito, Juliana Anderson, Ivy Overcash and Jordan McCall won singles matches for the Jaguars.
Capito-Annabel Barr, Overcash-Anderson and Ruth Clement-McCall swept doubles.
Middle school soccer
Dominic Capito scored the first goal for Salisbury Academy’s jayvees in a 5-4 win against Sacred Heart.
Local golf
In the eGolf Tour’s Cabarrus Classic, Frank Adams shot 69-71 – 140. He made the cut at 4-under and is tied for 33rd.
The cutline fell at 142. Will Collins shot 71-73 – 144.
College football
BOISE, Idaho – Nose tackle Mike Atkinson returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State held off BYU 7-6 on Thursday night in a game dominated by defense.
Boise State (2-1) forced five turnovers and held the Cougars (2-2) to 200 total yards. The Boise State offense wasn’t that much better, managing 261 total yards.
Atkinson’s big play came early in the third quarter when he dropped back into coverage, picked of Riley Nelson’s short pass and rumbled into the end zone. Nelson was benched after throwing his third interception of the game on BYU’s next possession.
Freshman Taysom Hill replaced Nelson.
