Boyce Caudle made a hole-in-one on the No. 3 hole at Warrior Golf Club on Monday.
Caudle used an 11-wood to ace the 119-yard hole.
Witnesses were Windsor Eagle, Ralph Brown and Lou Manning.
• The McCanless Couples played with a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
Winning team members were David Huneycutt, Ricky Honeycutt and Treva Honeyctt.
The second-place team consisted of Gene Seaford, Susan Houston, Tim Earnhardt and Phyllis Myers.
Prep golf
In Monday’s NPC girls golf match at McCanless, West Rowan won with a score of 135.
Kayla Boley (43), Kelly Boley (44), Kristen Boley (48) and Neely Holloway (48) led the Falcons.
East Rowan finished second at 139.
Kathrine Marcum led the Mustangs with a 44. Emily Cleveland shot 47, and Grace stokes carded a 48.
Carson placed fourth at 147. Adison Collins led the Cougars with a 47. Amber Reeder and Alisha Sears shot 50s.
South Rowan didn’t post a team score. Whitney Parks and Kolby Fisher competed for the Raiders.
• Salisbury also played in the match at McCanless and scored 113.
Isabella Rusher shot 32, Grace Yatawara carded a 37, and Brooke Smith shot 44.
College golf
Lauren Smith (Salisbury) led Appalachian State to an 11th-place finish in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville.
Smith shot 71-71 – 142 to finish 2-under. She tied for fourth place individually.
• UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) shot 78-75-79 – 232 in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at Finley Golf Course. He tied for 67th.
College volleyball
Kayla Morrow (South Rowan) helped the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears win two weekend SAC matches.
Morrow had 12 block assists and four kills in a 3-2 win against Newberry.
Morrow had six kills and six digs in a 3-2 win against Anderson.
The Bears play at Catawba tonight.
• Averett setter Nicole Barringer (South) had 54 assists, 13 digs and six kills in wins on Saturday against Randolph and Washington & Lee.
• Guilford setter Taylor Whitley (Carson) had 28 assists and six digs in a 3-0 loss to Bridgewater on Saturday.
• Hollins’ Lela Moore (West Rowan) had 10 assists, six digs and two kills in a loss to Randolph-Macon on Saturday.
• Shanna Stewart (Carson) had eight kills and served for 19 points in a win against Virginia-Lynchburg.
College soccer
Hannah Wilson (East Rowan) had a hat trick for St. Andrews in a 6-0 win against Chowan.
• Defender Jenna Bryan (Salisbury) has started all six games for Carson-Newman (2-4, 0-1).
Prep tennis
Salisbury is ranked No.1 in the state 2A poll.
•Gray Stone is still undefeated. The Knights beat East Montgomery to improve to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the YVC.
Singles winners were Meghan Hedgepeth, Libby Fowler, Brooke Herlocker, Jordan DeJaco, Caby Styers and Rachel Poston.
Hedgepeth-Herlocker, Fowler-DeJaco and Poston-Ilya Wang were winning doubles teams.
The Knights are ranked second in 1A behind Mt. Airy.
East Montgomery is ranked sixth.
• Davie County’s girls rolled to an 8-0 CPC win against North Davidson on Monday.
Nadia Gregory, Allie Billings, Jennifer Webster, Laura Kinder, Leah Gryder and Tatum Edwards won in singles.
Gregory-Kinder, Billings-Webster and Gryder-Edwards won in doubles.
Middle school volleyball
Salisbury Academy’s varsity stayed undefeated with a 25-11, 25-7 win against St. John’s.
The Jaguars are 5-0.
Youth soccer
The Green Dragons, the local FCCA 9U soccer team, competed in the DSC Rock Hill Classic over the weekend.
Maddox Goodnight and Ben Childress scored goals on assists from Griffin Smith to propel the Green Dragons into the championship bracket.
Wade Robbins and Colin Donaldson led the Green Dragons in a loss to the championship team.
Middle school football
North Rowan’s eighth-graders beat Knox 38-12.
Joseph Scott scored on runs of 5 and 27 yards, and Javine Goodine had a 10-yard scoring run.
Corbin Smith connected with Zion Debose for a touchdown pass. Spencer Bowler scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
Smith added two conversion runs and passed to Scott for two points. Malik Alford had a conversion run.
Defensive standouts for the Mavericks were Bowler, Goodine, Steven Thurston, Terry Cathcart and Dakerious Hoosier.
North’s teams are home this week against Erwin.
College cross country
USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) competed in Saturday’s 27-team Winthrop Invitational.
Oden ran 26:26 in the 8k to place ninth in the South Carolina collegiate division and 51st overall.
USC Upstate won the collegiate division and was sixth overall.
Prep cross country
In Saturday’s Weddington Invitational, Carson’s varsity boys placed sixth overall.
Zachary Marchinko (16th, 17:12) led the Cougars.
Kyle Gillis (24th, 17:44), Nick Thornton (27th, 17:56), Daniel Sherer (37th, 18:06) and Chris York (44th, 18:19) also contributed to Carson’s team score of 148.
Youth cross country
There were 142 participants in a local 5k hosted by Hoffner Dairy Farm on a tough course.
Twelve runners were from the Hurley YMCA Warriors.
Erwin’s Andrew Burgess, 12, placed third overall in 20:18.
Sacred Heart’s Bess Bryan, 12, ran 25:40 to lead 13-under girls.
Julianna Evans (Early College), was second in the 14-16 age group.
North Middle’s Aubree Cain, 11, and Coby Weant, 12, had third-place finishes.
Southeast’s Jonah Evans, 12, was fourth, and Kannapolis Middle’s Lauren Dorman, 11, was fifth.
Also finishing in the top 10 in their age group were Matthew Burroughs (Morgan Elementary), Noah Julian (Hurley), Eli Julian (Hurley), Jaxon Evans (Hurley) and Nate Shaffer (Knollwood).
The next competition for the Warriors is an AAU meet at Oct. 6 in Gastonia.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s football team will face the national total offense leader in Division II on Saturday. Tusculum quarterback Bo Cordell averages 424.6 yards per game. He’s passing for 405 yards per game.
• Catawba’s men’s soccer team battled to a 4-4 SAC draw with Anderson.
Corey Faughnan scored twice and Carson Smith and Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) had a goal each. Bonilla’s corner kick created a header by Faughnan for the tying goal late in the match.
Evan Harvey made eight saves for the Indians (3-2-1, 0-0-1).
• Catawba’s women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Anderson in their SAC opener. Catawba is 3-3 overall.
• Catawba’s volleyball team beat Mars Hill 3-1. The Indians (43-5, 1-1 SAC), got 18 kills, 15 digs and four blocks from Kaitlyn Whitmer.
