Metrolina Theatre Awards announced

The Metrolina Theatre Association has announced the nominees for the Metrolina Theatre Awards, which will be presented Sept. 23 at the Omni Charlotte Hotel.
The awards recognize outstanding performances and creative elements in eight categories – drama, comedy, musical, regional-north, regional-south, college/university, and special event. This year, there will be close to 100 recipients.
In the college and university category, nominees include Robin Tynes as outstanding lead actor-female for her role as Huck in the Catawba College production of “Huck Finn, A Musical.” That production also attracted nominations for Erin B. Dougherty (outstanding costume design), Christopher Zink (outstanding lighting design) and Courtney Cowman (outstanding choreography).
In the drama category, Jennifer Hubbard was nominated for outstanding supporting actor-female for her role as Ivy Weston in the Carolina Actors Studio Theatre production of “August: Osage County.”
In the musical category, Jonathan Elliot Coarsey was nominated for outstanding lead actor-male for his role as Floyd Collins in “Floyd Collins” (Carolina Actors Studio Theatre).
In the regional-north category, Anthony Liguori and Kurt Corriher received nominations as outstanding lead actor-male, Liguori for his role as Gabe in St. Thomas Players’ “Dinner with Friends” and Corriher for his role as Edward in “The Retreat from Moscow,” also a St. Thomas Players production.
Claudia Galup of St. Thomas Players received a nomination for outstanding lead actor-female for her role as Alice in “The Retreat from Moscow.”
Jacob Asher, also in “The Retreat from Moscow,” was nominated for outstanding supporting actor-male.
For outstanding supporting actor female, Lynne Harrell was nominated for her role as Amy in Piedmont Players Theatre’s “Company.”
Justin Dionne was nominated for outstanding direction for St. Thomas Players’ “The Retreat from Moscow.”
Reid Leonard was nominated for outstanding set design and outstanding sound design for Piedmont Players’ “You Can’t Take it With You.”
Leonard also was nominated for outstanding special technical effect for “Company.”
Virgie Taylor and Jenny Carroll also received nominations for outstanding musical direction/conducting for Piedmont Players Theatre’s “Company.”
Also for their work in “Company,” Sylvia Swisher and Jennifer Perrell were nominated for outstanding choreography.
St. Thomas Players gathered two nominations for outstanding properties design, one for Claudia Galup for “Dinner with Friends” and another for Jennifer Hubbard for “The Retreat from Moscow.”
In the regional south division, Jennifer Hubbard was nominated for outstanding actor-female for her role as Ruth Condomine in Fort Mill Community Playhouse’s “Blithe Spirit.”
