Area sports briefs: West jayvees fall

West Rowan’s jayvees lost 40-30 to Statesville on Thursday.
Kreshon Alexander had a big game on the ground for the Falcons. Alexander and Lee Poteat both threw scoring passes to Clint Euchner.
Poteat, Alexander and Daniel Flanagan had rushing TDs.
Dearius Phillips led West’s defense.
•A.L. Brown’s jayvees (2-2) thundered to a 40-0 win against Robinson.
Julian Balknight rushed for 111 yards on seven carries. Casey Walker had 102 yards on 14 carries and scored three TDs. Sandon McCoy chipped in with 72 of the Wonders’ 412 rushing yards.
Nate Williams kicked two PATs.
Devin Gray led the Wonders’ defense, making eight tackles and breaking up two passes.
• In other jayvee action, South Rowan won 26-14 against West Iredell; North Rowan won 14-8 against South Stanly, and Carson won 28-13 against East Rowan.
Prep volleyball
Salisbury’s volleyball team lost 3-0 to Central Davidson in a CCC match on Thursday.
Brielle Blaire had 11 kills for the Hornets, and Bria Gardner had eight.
Marlaweh Cole had nine digs to lead the defense.
Salisbury is 1-1 in the CCC.
Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys soccer team returned to action after a long layoff and fell 5-1 at Statesville on Thursday.
Bobby Cardelle scored for the Hornets (6-1-1) on an assist by Christian Uribe.
Salisbury plays Statesville at home on Tuesday.
“They handed it to us,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “I don’t know if it was the inactivity or if they’re just that much superior to us. We’ll find out Tuesday.”
• Salisbury’s jayvees lost 5-2 to the Greyhounds.
Matt Washko and Alex Julian scored the SHS goals.
Prep girls tennis
Dakota Honeycutt, Veronica Leasure, Daisy Lemke, Taylor Love and Catherine Crawford had singles wins for North Rowan in an 8-1 YVC win against North Moore on Thursday.
Honeycutt-Crawford, Lemke-Love and Leasure-Cheyanna Pall were the winning doubles teams.
• Salisbury didn’t lose a game in rolling to a 9-0 win against West Rowan on Thursday.
Katelyn Storey, Alexandra Drye, Anna Flynn, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer, Madeline Hoskins and Kayla Honeycutt were singles winners for the Hornets (9-2).
Meyerhoeffer-Drye, Storey-Flynn and Hoskins-Honeycutt were doubles winners.
• Davie won 6-3 against West Forsyth in CPC tennis on Thursday.
Nadia Gregory, Allie Billings and Ashley Dowell won in singles for the War Eagles.
Gregory-Laura Kinder, Billings-Jennifer Webster and Leah Gryder-Tatum Edwards swept doubles for Davie.
• East Rowan continued to roll with a 9-0 NPC victory against Carson.
Lizzie Weaver, Rebecca Agner, Laura Agner, Hannah Pressley, Lauren Thomas and Jasmine Cooper won in singles for the Mustangs (7-1).
Weaver-Rebecca Agner, Pressley-Thomas and Laura Agner-Cooper took the doubles matches.
Middle school softball
Madison Hunter struck out 12 and pitched a two-hitter for Erwin in a 2-1 win against Corrihe-Lipe.
Erwin made only one error. Caroline Johnson, Kaitlyn Thompson, Bree Medlin, Alissa Vanhoy and Lauren Wilsey had hits for the Eagles (3-0).
Middle school football
Mooresville took a 21-7 halftime lead and beat West Rowan 34-12.
Armoni Hogue and Kortez Weeks scored TDs for the Bulldogs. Weeks caught a 48-yard scoring pass from Hogue.
Other offfensive standouts for West were Javon Lofton and Tyler Wheeler. Rodney Howell and Hunter Brown led the defense.
West is at Corriher-Lipe next week.
• China Grove rolled over Corriher-Lip 38-0.
Cameron Corriher threw TD passes to Isaac Bell (37 yards) and Bailey Rayfield (5).
Austin Chrismon ran for touchdowns of 16 and 17 yards.
Rhine Barnette ran 5 yards for a touchdown.
Cole Howard kicked four PATs and picked off a pass.
Middle school soccer
Salisbury Academy won 5-0 against Hickory Christian on Thursday.
Drew Shelby made nine saves for his second shutout.
Andreas Kalogeromitros had three goals. Carter Cook scored on a free kick, and Marcus Corry tallied on a breakaway.
Corry had two assists.
Sweeper Adam Drye, Zach Johnson, Ben Coulter and El Simons had outstanding games.
Middle school tennis
China Grove’s girls won 5-4 against Southeast.
• China Grove won 7-2 against Knox. Siera Fesperman, Ciera Hunter, Gabi Jolly, Autumn Asbury, Margaret Correll and Megan Loan won ins singles.
Doubles winners were Hunter-Fesperman, Jolly-Asbury and Emily Sloop- Lunar Singsomphone.
• Erwin’s girls beat Southeast 5-4 in a thriller.
Singles winners for the Eagles were Katie Barnes, Shannon Mahaffey, Haley Loflin and Mia Graham.
Winning in doubles for Erwin was the team of Amanda Sigmon-Graham.
College women’s soccer
Catawba’s women’s soccer team beat Queens 2-1 in Charlotte on Thursday.
It was the third straight win for the Indians (3-2).
Juliana Conte scored the first goal on an assist by Karen Presnell (Salisbury).
Amy Iwanicki scored the deciding goal in the 65th minute.
Angelica Pawlowski had three saves for Catawba.
Local golf
Davidson’s Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) shot 77-83-81 — 241 (9-over) and tied for 65th in the Invitational at Kiawah Island.
• In the second round of the eGolf Tour’s Championship at Star Fort in S.C., Frank Adama III is at 69-70 — 139 and is tied for 25th at 5-under.
Will Collins is at 69-71 — 140, 4-under, and is tied for 30th.
College basketball
On Thursday, the SAC announced a change in venue for the Food Lion-sponsored conference basketball tournament.
The 2013 tournament semifinals and championship games will be held at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.
The tournament has been held for years at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, but there’s a scheduling conflict this time.
College football
In his first two games, Livingstone freshman quarterback Drew Powell broke two school records.
Powell broke the program single- game mark for passing attempts against Catawba with 45 on Sept. 8.
The previous record was held by Darryl Adrey, who set the mark with 36 pass attempts in 1992.
Powell also broke a 46 year-old record in his first college appearance against Chowan on Sept. 1.
Powell completed 22 of 35 passes against the Hawks. The old record for completions was set by Alfred Taylor with 21.
In addition to Powell’s record-setting, he is currently ranked first in the CIAA in passing yards and is 10th in all of Division II.
The Blue Bears face Edward Waters Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Edward Waters defeated the Blue Bears 14-13 in 2011. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
