Area sports briefs: North Rowan tennis romps

North Rowan’s girls tennis team rolled to a 9-0 YVC win against Albemarle on Wednesday.
Dakota Honeycutt, Veronica Leasure, Daisy Lemke, Taylor Love, Catherine Crawford and Victoria Scheve posted singles wins for North (5-4, 4-3 YVC).
Winning doubles teams were Honeycutt-Crawford, Lemke-Love and Scheve-Cheyanne Pall.
• Davie lost 6-3 to Reagan in a CPC match on Wednesday.
Allie Billings, Jennifer Webster and Ashley Dowell collected singles wins for the War Eagles.
•East Rowan won 9-0 against Mount Pleasant on Tuesday.
Singles winners were Lizzie Weaver, Rebecca Agner, Laura Agner, Hannah Pressley, Lauren Thomas and Drew Pethel.
Winning doubles teams for the Mustangs (6-1) were Weaver-Rebecca Agner, Pressley-Thomas and Laura Agner-Pethel.
Prep volleyball
Carson overpowered Ledford 25-13, 25-15 and 25-12 in Wallburg on Wednesday to win its 14th straight match.
Carson has swept every opponent so far and takes a 4-0 NPC record into today’s matchup with West Rowan.
Unbeaten North Iredell visits Carson on Tuesday.
• The Cabarrus Stallions beat Queen’s Grant 3-1.
Emily Messisco had 12 digs, and Anna Messisco had nine kills and eight assists. Jessica Chapman served for 18 points.
Local golf
Seventy GARS members played at Lexington Country Club earlier this week.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 64.68 was Ross Howard.
Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 64.47 was Butch Grambow. Ken Miller was the low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 66.32. Tommy Gray won ‘D’ Flight with a net of 69.31.
• In the eGolf Tour’s Championship at Star Fort, Will Collins and Frank Adams III shot 69s in the first round and are four shots off the pace.
7th-grade football
Knox beat North Rowan Middle 54-0.
Defensive standouts for the Trojans were Zarrek Barger, Nimely Davis and Xavier Lowe. Issac Baker and Nick Austin had interception returns for touchdowns.
Roger Chimney, Torry James, John Pruitt, Joe Steinman and Tony Campbell led the blocking for the Trojans.
TDs were scored by Austin, Montavio Rankin, Jaleel Webster and Laderious Carter. T.J. Gibson, Lowe, Austin and Rankin scored conversions.
Knox is at home against Southeast next week.
• West Rowan beat Mooresville 36-0.
Brandon Wallace (21 yards), Devin Turner (38) and Owen White (32) had long TD runs.
Malcolm Ingram threw a 65-yard TD pass to Nick Newton. White had a 44-yard interception return for a score.
Bryant Young twice threw conversion passes to Caleb Mauldin. Nelson Allen ran for a conversion.
Turner, Young, Wallace, Ingram, Dillon Simpson and Anthony Renegar led the Bulldogs’ defense.
West is at Corriher-Lipe next week.
Middle school soccer
Melvyn Bonilla’s hat trick led Sacred Heart to a 4-1 win against Salisbury Academy. Michael Childress also scored for the Dolphins. Elene Turnbull, Ceci Cardelle and Annie Habeeb had assists for the Dolphins (3-0).
Andreas Kalogeromitros scored for Salisbury Academy. Drew Shelby made nine saves.
Middle school tennis
Southeast’s girls beat Knox 7-2. Mackenzie Koontz, Brienne Leach, Keelee Morgan and Lindsay Elmore won in singles for the Patriots.
Koontz-Leach, Morgan-Elmore and Cheng-Landy swept doubles.
•Erwin’s girls beat North Rowan Middle 9-0 for their second win.
Winners in singles were Katie Barnes, Shannon Mahaffey, Alana Miller, Sabrina Harkey, Haley Loflin and Mia Graham.
Barnes, Mahaffey, Miller, Graham, Emily Avalos and Amanda Sigmon won doubles matches.
Middle school softball
Caroline Johnson and Micah Furr combined for nine strikeouts as Erwin’s softball team (2-0) beat North Rowan Middle 17-1.
Bree Medlin, Alissa Vanhoy, Madison Hunter, McKenzie Trimmer, Lauren Wilsey and Gracie Honeycutt led the Eagles’ offense.
College softball
Elon pitcher Chelsea White (East Rowan) is “98-percent healthy” and helped the Carolina Cardinals 18U finished second in the ASA national tourney in Johnson City, Tenn.
College volleyball
Averett’s Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) had 44 assists in losses to Emory and St. Thomas in Atlanta.
• Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kayla Morrow (South) had four kills in a sweep of Pfeiffer.
• Shanna Stewart (Carson) was one of the standouts for Johnson & Wales in a 3-2 loss to Livingstone.
• Lela Moore (West Rowan) had 59 assists for Hollins in losses to Gettysburg and Virginia Intermont.
College men’s golf
Catawba’s men’s golf team placed fourth in the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate held in Sevierville, Tenn.
Matt Hardman shot 71-74 – 145 to lead the Indians. He finished 11th overall.
College women’s golf
Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 77-73 – 150 to place fifth in the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate. Catawba finished 10th.
• In the Terrier Intercollegiate, Appalachian State’s Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot 83-75 – 158 and tied for 36th.
South Rowan YMCA
South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations for Little Shooters Basketball for boys and girls in grades 1-2.
South Y also is accepting registration for girls basketball for grades 3-8.
Cost is $36 for Y members and $60 for potential members.

Prep cross country
In the Statesville 5k championship race for boys, Mooresville’s Tim Coffey won in 16:08.
Carson’s Kyle Gillis placed second (16:23). East Rowan’s Conor Honeycutt placed fourth (16:27). A.L. Brown’s Max Chandler placed fifth (16:27). East’s Cal Meyers was sixth (16:29). A.L. Brown’s Timmy Hall was seventh (16:31). Carson’s Zachary Marchinko was eighth (16:43). East’s Jason Basso was ninth (16:45), and A.L. Brown’s Kellen Corson was 10th (16:59). West Rowan’s Cody McNeely was 11th (17:01).
East won the team competition with 47 points. A.L. Brown (62) was second, and Carson (75) was third.
• In the 5k Open Run, East’s Darin Basso won in 17:32, and East’s Josh Rowell was second in 17:38. Carson’s Dylan Snyder was fourth (18:20).
East won with a score of 36. Carson (41) was second.
• In the girls championship race, Davie’s Anna McBride was first (17:45), and Northwest Cabarrus’ Maddie Lowe (19:16) was second.
West Rowan’s Rebecca Parker (19:42) placed fourth.
Kelsie Simpson led A.L. Brown with a sixth-place finish (20:11).
Faith Blume (21:57) led East. Kenzy Bauer (22:20) paced Carson.
Fred T. Foard won the team competition with 59 points. The Wonders (71) were second.
• In the girls open race, Davie’s Sarah Burford was fourth. A.L. Brown’s Aaliyah Jackson placed sixth. East’s Karlie Neigel was eighth.
College men’s soccer
Ezra Ntirugelegwa and Corey Faughnan scored goals for Catawba in a 2-1 win against St. Andrews on Wednesday.
Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) initiated both scoring plays.
