Area sports briefs: Falcons up to No. 4

West Rowan moved up to fourth in the 3A rankings of AP state prep football poll released Tuesdsay.
West survived North Rowan 29-21 and is 4-0 heading into its NPC opener against Statesville, who is ranked tenth.
A.L. Brown dropped to sixth in the 3A ranks after falling to Porter Ridge 41-14. Concord checks in at ninth. Butler (4A), Northern Guilford (3A), Tarboro (2A) and Swain County (1A) are all ranked No. 1.
Prep girls tennis
Carson beat North Iredell 9-0 in NPC tennis on Monday.
Kelly Dulkoski, Haylee Hepler, Sara Lentz, Abby Cozart, Laura Isenhour and Addie Gantt won singles matches for the Cougars.
Doubles winners were Dulkoski-Hepler, Lentz-Isenhour and Cozart-Gantt.
Prep volleyball
Salisbury opened up CCC play with with a huge 3-1 win against West Davidson Tuesday. It marked the first time the Hornets have defeated WD.
Brielle Blaire came up with 11 kills and five blocks.
Salisbury JV’s defeated West Davidson 2-1 behind seven aces from Lora Withers.
• Davie defeated West Forsyth 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 Tuesday. Rachel Rubie had 12 kills for the War Eagles (3-1).Prep golf
Salisbury finished second in a three-team match Tuesday with Cannon and Ledford at River Run Country Club. Cannon shot 242 while Salisbury had a 250 team score. Ledford shot 273.
Sophomore Isabella Rusher shot 77 to lead the Hornets and Grace Yatawara offered a 85.
Cannon’s Anna Redding was medalist with a 73 and Kate Collam shot 81.
Middle school sports
West Rowan softball defeated Corriher-Lipe 11-1 Tuesday. Mandy Timmerman pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine. Ali Arrington, Parker Greene, Emily Spry, Khara Fesperman, Morgan Corriher, Danielle Neal and Timmerman all had hits for West.
Catawba athletics
Catawba freshman and Salisbury alum Kenny Bonilla was named SAC Soccer Player of the Week Tuesday. Bonilla scored the first two goals of his college career to give the Indians a 3-2 win at Barton Saturday. Bonilla scored twice in a two-minute span late as Catawba rallied from down 2-1.
• Catawba’s Olivia Myers was named SAC Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Myers won the 5k Catawba Invitational in a personal-best time of 18:58 and led the Indians to the team championship.
Local golf
Kristi Laton won first place and Phyllis Durland was second in the gross category at Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association play Tuesday.
First place in the net category was Joy Maughmer followed by Beverly Cobb, Shirley Baucom and Ruth Bowles.
Local running
Bob Marchinko won the Sunset 5K in 16:32 Friday night. Justin Pfunder (17:16), Adam Cornelius (18:04), Kyle Gillis (18:05) and Danyal Sherer (18:40) rounded out the top five.
Elizabeth Murphy was the top female finisher in 21:38.
