SALISBURY – Hundreds ran – and a few drove their derby cars – in downtown Salisbury on Friday as Kids’ Night Out again coincided with United Way of Rowan County’s annual campaign kickoff events.
After enjoying face painting, trolley rides and more during Night Out, kids and their parents stuck around for live music, the soap box derby and the BB&T Sunset Run 5K.
The kids even had their own race, a half-mile fun run sponsored by Rowan Regional Medical Center.
This was the third year for the Sunset Run, which benefits the United Way through runners’ registration fees. Race results are available from Ultimate Race Management. Organizers said their goal this year was to donate $10,000 to the nonprofit, but they hoped to eclipse last year’s total of $10,777.
New this year were chip timing in the 5K, which allowed for winners in different categories to be identified right after the race, and a $500 cash prize to the school with the most students taking part in the races.
