NC DOT to work on I-40 tunnels west of Asheville

WAYNESVILLE (AP) — The state Transportation Department will work for more than two weeks on three tunnels in the Pigeon River Gorge on Interstate 40 in Haywood County.
The work begins today and continues through Friday on the first eastbound tunnel, located between Exits 7 and 15. Work on an I-40 west tunnel located between the Tennessee state line and Exit 7 will occur Sept. 17 through Sept. 21. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during this work.
On Sept. 24-28, work will be done on a second I-40 east tunnel located between the Tennessee state line and Exit 7. Traffic will be rerouted to an access road during this time.
Workers will inspect and maintain the drainage system in each tunnel between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
