CONCORD – The Concord Police Department has identified the teen who committed suicide Friday after allegedly robbing a bank.
Maurice Spenser VanHecke, 16, of North Main Street in Davidson, entered the BB&T at 9686 Harris Road in Concord about 5:15 p.m. Friday wearing a mask. Police say he used a handgun to demand money before fleeing on foot.
VanHecke shot himself after police chased him to a garage at a house on Lolabridge Street, the release said.
Concord Deputy Chief Allen Overcash told the Charlotte Observer that officers fired no shots and there was no standoff.
No one else was injured and Overcash told the Observer that VanHecke apparently did not know the people who lived at the home.
VanHecke was a junior at William A. Hough High School in Cornelius and active at Davidson United Methodist Church, his obituary said.
Overcash told the Observer that investigators don’t yet know what caused VanHecke to do what he did.
“We haven’t found anything to show any motive at all,” Overcash told the Charlotte newspaper.
