From staff reports
Jerry Sands (Catawba) has been named MVP of the Albquerque Isotopes.
Sands completed a phenomenal regular season with the Isotopes on Monday.
In 119 games, Sands hit 26 homers and 17 doubles, drove in 107 runs and scored 84. He led the Pacific Coast League in RBIs and was third in homers.
Sands and his teammates clinched a division championship on Sunday and will start the playoffs at Omaha on Wednesday.
Sands remains in limbo as a current Dodger and future member of the Boston Red Sox.
He was included in the massive trade betweem Boston and L.A. last month, but players dealt after Aug. 1 have to clear waivers before changing organizations and Sands was claimed by another team. That prevented him from going to Boston, and the Dodgers had to pull him back off waivers.
Sands, who turns 25 late this month, still is expected to become a member of the Red Sox when the season ends. Until then, he remains the proverbial “player to be named later.”
Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators won 5-2 against Savannah on Monday to close the season on a high note. Joey DiMichele homered for the Intimidators, who decided the game with a three-run fifth.
