Friday Football Fever: South Rowan at A.L. Brown preview
Published 12:00 am Friday, August 24, 2012
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: South Rowan 0-1; A.L. Brown 1-0
Series: It has only occasionally been fun for the Raiders. A.L. Brown leads the series 41-8-2.
South’s last win was sparked by Blake Houston in 2009, the only victory for coach Jason Rollins in six tries against the Wonders.
South won in overtime in 2003 when Rick Vanhoy was coach.
South’s most recent win at Memorial Stadium was in 1994 in Larry Deal’s final year as head coach.
Last meeting: The Wonders breezed 63-12 at South with Damien Washington rushing for 197 yards on four carries. That’s a respectable 49.3 yards per carry.
Last week: South was smacked 66-31 by Central Cabarrus; A.L. Brown played on Thursday and demolished Shelby 44-0
Next week: South is at Northwest Cabarrus; A.L. Brown is home against Mint Hill Rocky River
Game notes: A.L. Brown’s running back tandem of Kalif Phillips and Ricky Sherrill, who was once South’s top ballcarrier before transferring, ran wild in Week 1.
The Wonders will look to get their passing game untracked this week. New QB Keenan Medley completed only a handful of passes in the opener, but one was a TD to Virginia Commitment Keeon Johnson.
Brown’s defense was the biggest story of the romp at Shelby. Linebacker Gabe Lucero had an interception and a fumble recovery.
The 66 points South allowed on opening night tied a dubious school record, and it had to qualify as one of the more disappointing openers in school history.
A lot of South’s stats came late, but Nathan Lambert put up 240 passing yards with aerials to Josh Medlin, Bryson Deaton and Tvadis Wesley. — M. London
