Area sports briefs: Salisbury tennis falls to Catholic

Salisbury lost 6-3 to Charlotte Catholic in girls tennis on Wednesday in a matchup of teams ranked No. 1 in the state in their classifications.
Singles winners for Salisbury were Anna Flynn and Madeline Hoskins.
Alexandra Drye-Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer won at No. 2 doubles.
There were a number of tight singles matches, with Flynn winning in a tiebreaker and Meyerhoeffer and Caroline Graham losing tiebreakers.
Catholic also won a tight 10-8 decision at No. 1 doubles.
Catholic was runner-up to Cardinal Gibbons in 3A last season, while Salisbury won the 2A title.

North Rowan beat North Moore 6-1 in a YVC match played on Wednesday in Spencer.
Dakota Honeycutt, Veronica Leasure, Daisy Lemke, Taylor Love and Catherine Crawford won in singles for the Cavaliers (2-1).
Honeycutt-Leasure won in doubles. Rain prevented two doubles matches from being completed.

Prep cross country
In the Wonder Relays held at North Cabarrus Park, East Rowan’s team of Conor Honeycutt, Justin Allen, Cal Meyers, Jason Basso and Graham Lyerly won the boys ‘A’ race in 25:02.
A.L. Brown’s Johnny Hodge, Timmy Hall, Mason Forrest, Kellen Corson and Max Chandler finished second in 25:13.
Carson’s Jacob Fink, Nick Thornton, Zach Marchinko, John Patella and Kyle Gillis finished third in 25:21.
In the girls ‘A race, Hickory Ridge won in 30:42.
A.L. Brown’s Lexie Petty, Briana Landis, Osbeida Benitez, Kelsie Simpson and Erika Neese finished second in 31:38.
East’s Chase Brown, Jason Troutman, Josh Rowell, Drew Kluttz and Darin Basso won the boys ‘B’ race.
Prep soccer
Salisbury stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 win at West Rowan Wednesday.
The Hornets are 4-0.
Prep volleyball
East Rowan’s volleyball team beat Salisbury 26-24, 14-25, 26-24 and 25-20 in a close match on Wednesday.
Steffi Sides served for 15 points, with two aces, and had 18 assists for the Mustangs. Ashton Rogers had 15 assists. Brittany Small served for 17 points and had five aces. Karleigh Wike had 10 kills and six blocks.Cortney Gillispie had eight aces for the Hornets. Maddie Gentry had seven aces and five digs.
Bria Gardner led the SHS attack with seven kills and four blocks. Marlaweh Cole was a standout on defense with nine digs.
East’s jayvees beat the Hornets 25-15 and 25-12. Macey Beattie led the Mustangs by serving eight aces.
Carson moved to 7-0 with a sweep of Ledford on Wednesday.
Legion World Series
Emerson Gibbs pitched a three-hitter for New Orleans (41-7) in a 4-0 win over Brooklawn, N.J., in the decisive game of the American Legion World Series.
Because of rain delays, the game was finished in the wee hours of Wednesday morning in Shelby.
Gibbs, who is headed to Tulane, was honored as Legion Player of the Year. Brooklawn finished 59-5, including two World Series losses to New Orleans.
East Diamond Sports
Fall registration for East Rowan Diamond Sports is in the East Rowan High cafeteria on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 2-4 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 30, from 6-7:30 p.m.
The cost is $50 for T-ball. Cost is $65 for Coach Pitch, Minors and Majors.
Cost is $85 for the Babe Ruth league for Juniors.

Catawba tennis clinics
Catawba tennis clinics will be held on Tuesday evenings, Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings, and Sunday afternoons. The clinics start on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The cost of a clinic is $10.

College football
Catawba will have a theme for each of its home football games this season.
When Catawba plays Livingstone on Sept. 8 for the Mayor’s Cup, the late James “Jim” F. Hurley III, local philanthropist and former publisher of the Salisbury Post, will be remembered. Hurley’s picture will be printed on the front of all game programs that night.
Also at the Livingstone game, Catawba’s 2012 regional baseball champs will be recognized.
The Livingstone Blue Bears will host their Friday Night Lights scrimmage at Alumni Memorial Stadium on Aug. 24.
Kickoff for the scrimmage is set for 7 p.m. It’s open to the public.
Entertainment will be provided by a DJ, the Livingstone marching band and cheerleaders.
Wingate announced a 2012 Hall of Fame class that includes former Davie County football player Kendall Chaffin.
Team MVP in 1993, Chaffin was named All-SAC on both sides of the ball — as an offensive lineman in 1992 and a linebacker in 1993.
He may be the only player in league history to receive All-SAC honors on both offense and defense.

Appalachian State follows defending national champion North Dakota State, 2011 national runner-up Sam Houston State, Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern and Montana State in the preseason coaches poll.
Appalachian returns 16 starters (five offense, eight defense, three specialists) from last year’s squad that finished 8-4.
Conference Carolinas
Burlington Recreation & Parks will host CC tournament championship events this spring and in 2014 and 2015 in baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse.
Knox boosters
The Knox Athletic Booster Club will meet on Monday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. in the school library.

Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 5-4 at Hagerstown on Wednesday in South Atlantic League action. Chris Curley homered for the third straight day for Kannapolis. Cutter Dykstra’s two-run double keyed the victors.
Keegan Linza (North Rowan) pitched five innings for Great Falls in the Pioneer League on Tuesday and allowed two runs. He stuck out four and walked none.
Linza has 45 strikeouts this season, while walking only four batters in 64 innings.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had three hits and two RBIs and stole two bases for Winston-Salem on Wednesday in a 7-2 Carolina League win against Lynchburg.
Wagner has 22 steals.
