WILMINGTON (AP) — The battleship North Carolina is making plans to host overnight guests.
The StarNews reports officials plan to spend about $2.5 million to renovate areas where sailors had their berths as well as the ward room aboard the vessel moored across from downtown Wilmington.
The idea is that groups, such as Boy Scouts, will get a taste of living aboard the ship. The renovations would provide overnight accommodations for about 130 people.
The ship’s promotions director, Heather Loftin, says state officials are reviewing the plan. Once it’s approved, a contract will be awarded and construction should begin this fall.
The program is expected to start next spring.
The aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in South Carolina offers a similar overnight program.
