Area sports briefs: Query back home tonight

Catcher Ryan Query had two hits, scored two runs and threw out a base-stealer in Rome’s 10-2 win against Augusta on Thursday.
The Rome Braves open a series in Kannapolis tonight. It’ll be a homecoming for Query, who starred at A.L. Brown and Catawba.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 4-3 in 11 innings at Hickory on Thursday.
Chris Grayson’s single won it for the Crawdads. He also homered and tripled.
Kyle Robinson hit a home run for the Intimidators.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) stole his 18th base and scored a run for Winston-Salem in a 6-4 win against Wilmington on Thursday in the Carolina League.
Major leagues
Bobby Parnell notched his fourth save of the season late Wednesday night for the New York Mets.
Parnell pitched the ninth inning of a 2-1 win against the San Francisco Giants and retired Buster Posey, Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro.
American Legion
Randolph County stayed alive in the state tournament in Lenoir by beating Apex 6-1 on Thursday.
Connor Pratt struck out eight batters in seven innings for the win. Jake Hall led the offense with a three-run homer.
Randolph plays today at 4:30 p.m. against Caldwell County.
Apex was eliminated.
Also eliminated was Area III champion High Point, a 9-8 loser to Pitt County.
Charlie Herring and Austin Chiang had three hits each for Pitt.
High Point scored three runs in the ninth but still came up short.
Tyler Shumaker hit two home runs as Cherryville beat Whiteville 9-4 to stay unbeaten in the event.
Seth Weekley pitched six strong innings. Thomas Bess had three hits.
Zac Brown and Trent Martin homered for Whiteville.
Wilmington beat host Caldwell County 9-7 to stay unbeaten in the tournament.
Austin Beard hit a grand slam in a losing cause for Caldwell.
Wilmington plays Cherryville tonight.
Wood bat leagues
Justin Roland (East Rowan, Charlotte) had two hits for Thomasville in a 3-1 win against Gastonia on Wednesday in the Coastal Plain League.
n John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) saved Asheboro’s 6-5 CPL win against Florence in his latest outing. It was the third save for Tuttle, who has a 1.83 ERA.
College baseball
Appalachian State is counting down the most memorable 30 moments of the 2011-12 athletic year at the school.
Voted No. 2 was the 6-5 baseball win against Virginia that advanced the Mountaineers to the regional championship game in Charlottesville. ASU’s trio of East Rowan grads — Trey Holmes, Preston Troutman and Noah Holmes — went 6-for-11 in that game.
nMichael Rogers, a two-time All-America pitcher at NC State and six-year pro baseball veteran, has joined Appalachian State’s baseball staff as an assistant coach.
UNC Wilmington has hired former Seahawk Josh Simmons as an assistant coach. Simmons has been coaching at Barton.
Local golf
Logan Shuping shot 75 at Sapona Country Club to qualify for the Dogwood State Junior Championship next week in Greensboro. Shuping finished tied for 10th out of 90 junior golfers attempting to qualify.
The qualifying line fell at 77.
Joseph Rusher shot 79. Alex Austin shot 88.
In a Country Club of Salisbury ladies event held on Thursday, Cindy Carmazzi won with a 66 and Bev Cobb was second at 77. The 18-hole event was “Replay six shots — net score.”
In a Carolinas Golf Association one-day tournament in Aberdeen, Bill Haynes shot 76 to tie for seventh in the ‘A’ Division.
Bill Troxler shot 81 to tie for seventh in the ‘B’ Division. Bryce Beard shot 84 to tie for 11th.
In the CGA’s Senior Four-Ball Tournament held at Rock Barn in Conover on Thursday, the team of Russ Priddy-Grey Medinger shot 78 and finished 19th in the ‘A’ Flight.
In the Carolina Golf Foundation’s Four-Ball Fundraiser Tournament in New London, the pairing of Lee Frick- George Benfield tied for third in the ‘A’ Division at 68.
In the second round of stroke-play qualifying for the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Forest Oaks in Greensboro, the cutline fell at 146.
Alex Nianouris shot 79-74 — 153 and Roy Dixon III shot 74-80 — 154. Alex Lee shot 90-79 — 169.
In the eGolf Tour’s Championship at Woodside Plantation, Frank Adams III shot 71-70 — 141 to make the cut. He’s at 3-under. The cutline fell at 2-under.
Youth soccer
FC Carolina Alliance will again offer elite soccer training for ages 4 – 10 in the Harrisburg and Salisbury areas through their “Munchkin” and “Pre Academy” programs.
Each program begins at the start of September and runs for eight weeks through the end of October. The registration deadline for each program is Aug. 31, with the cost of enrollment $80 for the Munchkin program and $125 for Pre-Academy.

Fishing
A NCCATS Catfish Tournament will be held on Lake Norman at Aug. 11. Registration starts at 6 p.m. Tournament hours are 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The weigh-in site is the Pinnacle Wildlife Access at the Highway 150 Bridge in Mooresville.
n Youth racing
The Carolina Clash finals will be held at the NCQMA track off exit 72 in Salisbury through Saturday.
The event is for ages 5-16 and attracts races from all over the country.
The Discovery Channel will be in town to shoot coverage of this event for a pilot episode they are doing with USAC. Speed Channel is shooting a feature on Jeff Burton’s son Harrison.
Practice, heats and lower mains will be held today.
Main events are Saturday.
Youth track
In the AAU National Junior Olympic Championships in Houston, Andrew Burgess of the Hurley YMC Warriors was 19th in the 800. Competing in the 12-year-old division, he ran 2:23.78.
Earlier, Burgess was seventh in the 3000 in 10:35.80 to earn All-America honors and 12th in the 1500 in 4:57.37.
Parker Westbrook of the Warriors was 55th in the 800 in the 9-year-old division. He ran 2:59.74.
Christian Morgan of the Salisbury Speedsters was 32nd in the 800 in the 9-year-old division. Morgan ran 2:50.03.
Morgan was 42nd in the 400 in 1:11 and 62nd in the 200 in 31.96.
Tamia Brown of the Speedsters is competing in the 11-year-old division. She was 63rd in the 100 (14.71), 64th in the 200 (30.18) and 74th in the 400 (1:10.05).
Kashara Brawley of the Speedsters is competing in the 14-year-old division. Brawley was 70th in the 200 in 27.68 and 61st in the 100 in 13.44.
Softball tryouts
Rowan Rage softball tryouts are on Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tryouts are at Rockwell Elementary School. The Rage is looking for players for 12U and 14U teams.
