KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis City school system’s graduation rate fell this year, but it remains higher than the state average.
According to data released this morning by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, the district has a four-year graduation rate of nearly 83 percent, down from 85 percent last year. A.L. Brown is the district’s only high school.
The statewide graduation rate hit a historic high this year with more than 80 percent of students who started ninth grade in 2008-09 completing high school in four years or less.
The graduation rates were released in conjunction with the final ABCs of Public Education accountability report.
This year’s report uses Annual Measurable Objectives, replacing Adequate Yearly Progress, which has been dubbed an “all or nothing” accountability model.
Three of the district’s schools, including Forest Park Elementary, Jackson Park Elementary and A.L. Brown met 100 percent of the new objectives.
Forest Park, Jackson Park and Shady Brook Elementary schools as well as Kannapolis Middle met expected growth. All three of those elementary schools also met high growth.
All but two of the school system’s eight schools, Shady Brook Elementary and Kannapolis Intermediate, had a performance composite of at least 70 percent.
The performance composite is the percentage of students at each school who are proficient in all tested subjects.
