Rowan's unemployment rate up slightly

Rowan County’s June unemployment rate crept up slight to 10.3 percent from May’s rate of 10 percent.
In June 2011, Rowan’s unemployment rate was 11.9 percent.
The story is much the same in Cabarrus County, where unemployment went up to 9.2 percent in June, from 9 percent in May. In June 2011, the rate was 10.5 percent.
Unemployment rates rose in 84 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in June, fell in 11 and were unchanged in five. When compared to the same month last year, unemployment rates declined in 91 counties, increased in six, and remained the same in three.
North Carolina had 39 counties that were at or below the state’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9.9 percent. Unemployment rates increased in all 14 Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
Currituck County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in June at 5.3 percent, and Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 17.6 percent.
In other counties surrounding Rowan, the rates are:
• Davidson County — 10.5 percent for June; 10.2 for May; and 12.1 percent in June 2011;
• Davie County — 8.7 percent for June, down slightly from 8.9 percent in May; June 2011 was 9.7 percent;
• Iredell County — rose to 10.1 percent for June from 9.8 in May; June 2011 was 11.8 percent;
• Stanly County — rose to 10.2 percent from May’s rate of 9.7 percent; the rate in June 2011 was 11.8 percent.
